Feminist Coming Out Day Sparks Conversation

Buttons bearing the provocative message “This is what a feminist looks like” once again appeared all over campus on Monday, marking Boston College’s second annual Feminist Coming Out Day. This year’s Feminist Coming Out Day built upon last year’s by offering a handout with the button, but more can be done in future years to engage a greater portion of the student body.

Bystanders’ Efforts Must Lead To More Dialogue

Jessica Stevens, A&S ’14, and Joseph Palomba, A&S ’15, who both work in the Women’s Resource Center’s Bystander Intervention program, attended a roundtable discussion with the Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault at the White House last week. This invitation is not only a testament to the important work that Stevens and Palomba are doing at Boston College, but it is also a further affirmation that sexual assault is not adequately addressed on college campuses across the U.S.

BC Must Reevaluate Its Core Revision Process

Last spring, Boston College brought in an outside consulting firm to help develop a plan for a new core curriculum. Last year’s Core Renewal Committee developed a new plan, heavily focused on interdisciplinary courses, that was meant to be piloted beginning in the fall of 2013. The new core structure was not implemented, however, and it now appears that the University has returned to the drawing board.

With well-developed plans of action for many of their platform points and extensive UGBC experience under their belts, Fiore-Chettiar and Marchese are best equipped to execute their vision for UGBC in the year ahead.
