Recent research has demonstrated that the global impacts of climate change on human health stem from pressing systemic issues, according to Brian Thiede, associate professor of Rural Sociology, Sociology, and Demography at Pennsylvania State University.
In a lecture on Friday, María Bianco Galindez, a part-time faculty member in the School of Social Work and BCSSW ’20, drew from her research surrounding the challenges of migration to the United States and discussed the nature of being a mother while migrating and seeking refuge in today’s world.
“No one can dispute the importance of national security, but there needs to be a balanced approach looking at our national interest and our humane obligations,” said David Phillips, director of the peace-building and rights program at Columbia University.
Migration was no longer an abstraction. It was nothing to be conceptualized and analyzed in some ivory tower. It was this woman’s, these people’s reality.
