When a hockey team is dominant enough to take 70 shots on goal, some are bound to find their way into the net.
That was the case for Boston College women’s hockey (1–2, 0–0 Hockey East), who soared to a 4–1 rout of Saint Anselm (2–1, 2–0, Northeast-10) on Saturday in Manchester, N.H.
The matchup marked the Eagles’ first win of the season after back-to-back losses against No. 3 Minnesota.
It was all offense for the Eagles, as they managed a staggering 110 shots and 70 shots on goal, compared to the Hawks’ 39 shots and 19 shots on goal.
There was no shortage of scoring opportunities for the Eagles throughout the game, but Hawks goalie Kayla Czukoski kept the Eagles scoreless in the first and third periods.
After multiple BC shots were deflected by Czukoski, the Eagles’ first goal came with 16:38 left in the second period. Kate Ham soon swooped in to put the puck in the net, bringing the Eagles’ lead to 1-0.
Just under two minutes later, Ava Thomas sent the puck across the ice to Sammy Taber. Taber then set it right in front of Ham, who scored her second goal of the night.
BC increased its edge to a three-goal lead with 6:27 to go in the period.
The Eagles’ third score was single-handedly orchestrated by Thomas, who won a face-off, maneuvered around multiple Hawks with ease, and sent the puck into the top shelf of the net.
With 1:59 left in the period, Sammy Taber scored the Eagles’ final goal of the night, bringing their lead to 4-0.
Her power-play goal was hard-earned, as she navigated through a sea of skaters to put the puck into the net.
Led by goaltender Grace Campbell’s 18 saves, the Eagles’ high-powered offense was aided by a dominant defensive effort.
The Hawks’ only goal came well after the contest was decided. Lucy DeCoteau was the scorer with 21 seconds left in the game.
In 2024, after starting the season 1–3, the Eagles went on an eight-game winning streak.
Only time will tell if that will happen this time around.
