Three members of Boston College men’s hockey have been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, as announced by its committee’s official Facebook page. Forwards Colin White and Ryan Fitzgerald, as well as goaltender Thatcher Demko, were selected as one of 66 preliminary candidates for the sport’s highest honor.
Demko, a junior from San Diego, Calif. and a prospect of the Vancouver Canucks, has been one of the country’s best goaltenders. He started out strong, posting six shutouts in the first few weeks of the season, and is still second-best in the country—only Quinnipiac’s Michael Garteig has more, with seven shutouts. He is tied for seventh in save percentage (.936, with Rensselaer’s Jason Kasdorf) and is alone in seventh in goals against average (1.742) while playing the 12th-most minutes in the country.
White is a freshman from Hanover, Mass. who was drafted in the first round in 2015 by the Ottawa Senators. He is tied with Fitzgerald for the most points on the team, and the 10th-most in the country, with 28 (12 goals, 16 assists). Fitzgerald, a Boston Bruins prospect out of North Reading, Mass., has 13 goals and 15 assists, and is the brother of BC freshman defenseman, Casey.
