Terriers Narrowly Defeat BC 2–1, Marks Fifth Loss in Seven Games

Boston College softball started its game against Boston University on Wednesday with a run in the first inning of play.

The Eagles held that lead until the top of the fifth, when the Terriers evened things out with a run of their own.

Headed into the final inning of play, it was anyone’s game. But ultimately, it turned out to be the Terriers’, as BU (26–11, 9–0 Patriot League) beat BC (17–19, 3–9 Atlantic Coast) 2–1 thanks to a final-inning homer.

Things were going well for Kelly Colleran, who pitched all seven innings for BC. She gave up a leadoff single and a double in the fifth, which led to the game-tying run from BU.

Colleran retired three batters in order in the sixth, getting the Eagles out of the frame unscathed and keeping the affair tied up 1–1.

The top of the seventh inning wasn’t nearly as stainless, and it was ultimately the difference between a victory and BC’s fifth loss in seven games.

Sydney Pecoraro went in to pinch hit. But Colleran shut that effort down, as Pecoraro struck out. Unfortunately for BC, that pattern didn’t persist. Kylie Doherty cracked a home run to center field, giving BU a one-run lead.

Colleran managed two more groundouts to send the game into the bottom of the final inning with the Eagles down just one run. Immediately, things went south.

Meghan Schouten started the inning off by striking out. Then, Kali Case followed that up with a groundout to the shortstop.

Janis Espinoza stepped up to the plate with two outs on the board and the game entirely in her hands.

It was hit or go home for the Eagles. Espinoza chose the hit option.

Her bat found the ball as she hit a single into right field, extending BC’s chances for at least one more at-bat.

That at-bat did not work out too well for BC, though, as Addison Jackson hit a fly out to left field, ending the game with BU on top.

BC’s offense just wasn’t explosive enough to get a win, even though its defense managed to keep it close for so long. The Eagles managed just four hits on 23 at-bats.

Although Colleran pitched six strikeouts in the 30 at-bats she went up against, her solid performance on the mound was all-for-naught as a home run in the top of the seventh sent the Eagles home with their second-straight loss.
