“My daughters seemed disappointed … so we wrote the idea in their invention journal,” Fonte said. “We signed it and then the next day I went into work, and I started asking my engineer friends, ‘Do you think we could freeze six ounces of ice cream in a minute?’”

“One of the initiatives in our department … is rethinking how we teach in light of the spotlight that we have on systemic structural racism,” Braun said. “However beneath the surface it might be, to what extent is that part of the way in which we teach quantitative methods when we think that well, quantitative methods are racist? … And so, [we’re] rethinking in a rigorous way our assumptions about what’s worth studying, how we study it, how we interact with different communities, and how we interpret and communicate those results.”
“It’s got to have some functionality to it, like it’s got to be more than an art form,” Wang said. “And I think that’s where the fashion industry is a bit lacking is understanding the utility side of things.”
“I never thought it would hit alumni from years and years ago, and seeing people’s reactions really did help kind of connect me back to BC during a tough time during the pandemic, and I think, at least I hope, it really helped connect other people as well,” Wang said.
“At first it was wild,” Humphrey said. “We had 120 folks, showing up to our sessions for like an hour and a half to just ask every question they’ve ever had about Zoom.”
