There is an old collegiate tradition of applauding a professor after his or her last lecture. Today, this tradition is often forgotten. Sometimes, however, the professor receives applause at the conclusion of every lecture. It appears that this tradition, in whatever form, stems from the students’ gratitude for the professor’s willingness and ability to share knowledge of all things historical, philosophical, mathematical, scientific, and whatnot.

The problem of etiquette today is a trite topic in some sense. The older generations chide the younger, and the younger rebel against the older. It’s cliche.

A quick Google search for the phrase “spiritual but not religious” yields a list of varied results-everything from webpages espousing spiritual aid, to humanist chaplains writing on how to be good without God, to religious advocates warning against the dichotomy of spirituality and religion, to a host of popular media sites, each with its respective columnists and pundits popping opinions left and right.

With everyone returning to campus from Spring Break, I have already gotten word of the many service trips BC students went on during the break. Volunteering today has, however, become just a part of what many people do to get into college, to put on a resume, or to stand out as an applicant to a program or for an award. This attitude is deeply problematic.

Today we run the risk of becoming too familiar with things. In our daily lives we are often caught up in the familiar routines we have. We simply fall into the routine trap of everyday life, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that. So I propose we defamiliarize.

I have a policy about spiders. Some might disagree with me. PETA would probably be outraged-guessing by their reaction to the president killing a fly some time ago. Others, though, might concur. My policy runs thus: All spiders, by virtue of their being, ought not to be.
