“We saw a problem in schools,” Kim said. “You don’t really use what you learn in high school for a job, maybe in college. So what we wanted to do was offer things like entrepreneurship education and financial literacy, things that I personally think really matter in helping students understand what they really want to do with their lives.”
“A community foundation is driven to build collaboration and solve for a multitude of needs in a community,” Desmon said. “It’s a covener.”
“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a father-son relationship as strong, as loving, as caring as that of Luke and Tim Russert,” Huffstetler said. “That [relationship] was not manufactured for TV. It was truly something else.”
“In South Africa, the inequities on race and class were just very obvious because of the legacy of apartheid, which made me very interested in doing work there,” Van de Water said. “There was a brutal HIV epidemic and devastation on the whole healthcare system.”
“The book argues that education was a political right,” Bilder said. “Women wanted access to education as a way to then be allowed to participate in politics, and in the period of the dawn of the Constitution, it’s not yet clear that everyone should be excluded based on race and gender.”
“I’m always interested in inner life, family, psychology, kind of how people move through the world in the daily ways in terms of their consciousness,” Graver said. “But I think I’m also increasingly interested in how these small figures intersect with the big history.”
“I think one of the underlying missions of the [CSON] and even social justice is working with vulnerable populations and helping to address health disparities and health inequality,” Nguyen said. “This project is an opportunity to teach students and engage in projects that are making some inroads towards achieving health equity.”
“The goal of the SSC is to bring entrepreneurship at Boston College to the forefront of the local and national startup ecosystem,” its website reads. “SSC Venture Partners is the next stage in the evolution of that mission.”
“I now realize that what I do at Sarah’s Handmade isn’t that different from my teaching background,” Park, BC ’13, said. “I’m doing more than just giving my employees an hourly wage—I am creating a community, a sense of purpose, and a sense of responsibility, and this is no different than creating a community in any environment I’ve been in.”
“You get to practice valuable skills, make enjoyable, meaningful connections with other like-minded individuals on campus, and have some valuable enjoyment on your Tuesday afternoon, or whatever day you choose,” Koczela said.
