Twenty years ago, eight Newtonians lost their lives in the tragic events of Sept. 11. Twenty years later, Newtonians gathered in front of the fire department headquarters and around the Sept. 11 memorial. Together they remembered the lives lost on that day.
Keeping with Newton’s goal of making the city more inclusive to minorities, Hattie Derrick is assuming the role of LGBTQ+ liaison for the City of Newton. Her new position, which expands her role as director of community engagement and inclusion, will provide support and serve as a voice for the LGBTQ+ community.
An indoor mask mandate for public spaces in Newton will go into effect on Sept. 2, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced in a statement on Thursday evening.

After over eight years of renovations, the Nathaniel T. Allen House, located at 35 Webster St. in West Newton, has finished its transformation into a multi-purpose space now known as the Nathaniel Allen Center for Arts and Culture.
