Conway Emphasizes the Benefits of Restorative Practices in Prisons

Spending time in the classroom benefits incarcerated individuals because it allows them to feel like students rather than prisoners, according to Patrick Conway, director of Boston College’s Prison Education Program. Conway spoke on Tuesday as part of the Lynch School of Education and Human Development’s Experience, Reflection, and Action seminar for first-year students.

BC Celebrates Community at Annual Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Kickoff

Silence filled a crowded room in Gasson Hall on Friday night as colorful flags and golden balloons lined the front of the room. Students and faculty bowed their heads as Yvonne McBarnett, director of the Thea Bowman AHANA and Intercultural Center (BAIC), led a prayer to begin the Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month celebration. McBarnett’s prayer kicked off a lineup of speakers and performances to commemorate the first day of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, which is celebrated each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Samuels spoke to Boston College students and faculty on Sept. 13 about his journey documenting the contours of George Floyd’s life and his attempts to bring light to who Floyd was as a human being. The event was part of the Lowell Humanities Series at BC, co-sponsored by the Forum on Racial Justice in America and the African and African diaspora studies program.
