David Quigley, dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, will serve as Boston College’s new provost and dean of faculties beginning on June 1, the University announced Tuesday. Quigley, who has been in his current role since 2009, has demonstrated successful leadership of A&S and is a highly qualified choice for the important position of University provost.

Buttons bearing the provocative message “This is what a feminist looks like” once again appeared all over campus on Monday, marking Boston College’s second annual Feminist Coming Out Day. This year’s Feminist Coming Out Day built upon last year’s by offering a handout with the button, but more can be done in future years to engage a greater portion of the student body.

Although Spring Break is often considered an opportunity to get some rest and unwind two months into the spring semester, students should exercise caution and use responsible judgment while on vacation, as very real risks still exist.

Jessica Stevens, A&S ’14, and Joseph Palomba, A&S ’15, who both work in the Women’s Resource Center’s Bystander Intervention program, attended a roundtable discussion with the Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault at the White House last week. This invitation is not only a testament to the important work that Stevens and Palomba are doing at Boston College, but it is also a further affirmation that sexual assault is not adequately addressed on college campuses across the U.S.

Five former Boston College football players participated in the NFL Combine over the weekend, representing the school and the football program well with impressive performances as they try to make their way onto NFL rosters this spring.

Peter Folan, BC ’97, was tapped by Catholic Memorial School last week to serve as its fourth president. While Folan’s departure marks a loss for FYE and the University, it is also a prestigious opportunity for which Folan deserves recognition.

This year saw the rollout of the Gold Pass, an electronic ticket for access to all BC sporting events at a single price. While successful in its inaugural year, the Gold Pass still has some problems that the athletics department should work to resolve.

This year saw significant changes in elections structure-the actual campaign period was limited to 10 days, there was no primary vote, and the Elections Committee introduced new sanctioning guidelines. The changes did not entirely eliminate campaigning issues, though.

Last spring, Boston College brought in an outside consulting firm to help develop a plan for a new core curriculum. Last year’s Core Renewal Committee developed a new plan, heavily focused on interdisciplinary courses, that was meant to be piloted beginning in the fall of 2013. The new core structure was not implemented, however, and it now appears that the University has returned to the drawing board.

The Heights endorses Nanci Fiore-Chettiar and Chris Marchese, both A&S ’15, for president and executive vice president of UGBC. The Fiore-Chettiar-Marchese team’s platform offers the best and most realistic vision for Boston College’s student government in the year ahead. With well-developed plans of action for many of their platform points and extensive UGBC experience under their belts, Fiore-Chettiar and Marchese are best equipped to execute their vision for UGBC in the year ahead.
