As an alumnus of Boston College, this is the time of year which I am again reminded of BC’s fundraising efforts in the form of the twice weekly calls from well-meaning undergraduates who solicit donations. Again, I am reminded that since I graduated in the early ’80s I have not given one nickel to BC.

I’m not saying I’m not jealous of your tan, but Henry David T would be proud of what went down last week (and Boston College should be, too). Over Spring Break, hundreds of college students were arrested for engaging in civil disobedience by cuffing themselves to the White House fence, as thousands of others cheered them on.

A word of praise for the students who make up the Boston College Fossil Free organization. Sixteen members of BCFF devoted their Spring Break to lobbying in Washington for a more serious approach to this fundamental threat, six of them strenuously enough to get arrested for upsetting politicians.

It’s approaching two years since I graduated from Boston College, a fact with which I have finally come to terms. You will always carry your memories of BC, but BC will march forward without even noticing that you are gone. However, there is one exception. BC will always remember you as a source of money.
Matthew Alonsozana’s Feb. 5 op-ed betrays its supposed intent for “a more sustainable BC.” We in BC Fossil Free (BCFF) have the same goal, but we understand that such actions will do little to address the deepening climate crisis jeopardizing our future. As we correct some of Alonsozana’s mischaracterizations, we hope you will come to understand why young people on campus have been pushing for divestment and, more generally, fighting for climate justice.
Yes, you’re correct-UGBC election season is one of the most trying times to be a Boston College student. UGBC is supposed to come to us, the students, but if it doesn’t, let’s go to it. If you think that we’re better off by ignoring UGBC or isolating it as an unrepresentative voice of the students, you’re wrong.
We are thankful to the senior administration of Boston College who not only listened but heard the voices of the parents, faculty, and volunteers of the Campus School as well as BC alumni who spoke on our children’s behalf.
