While recent events have shed light on the treatment of Asian Americans in our country, I want to make sure that this reflection does not narrow the scope of my thoughts to the hate crimes we are seeing today. Rather than describing it as “Asian hate,” I hope that my reflection will redefine the events as a lack of empathy for and understanding of a diverse range of cultures.
American Politics Need Empathy
I never considered myself a political person. But recently, I realized that I was wrong. I believe there have been a series of radical moments in my life that led me to this realization. As a freshman in high school, I read about and witnessed the separation and deportation of families at the United States-Mexico…
Leahy’s Leadership Is Not Jesuit: In Response to: “Complaints About Boston College Priest”
During his tenure at Boston College, University President Rev. William P. Leahy, S.J., has made a big deal out of living one’s life in accordance with Jesuit values. Shortly after becoming president in the fall of 1996, Leahy supported BC’s decision not to recognize the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Community (LGBC) student group, saying that…
In Response To: “Complaints About Boston College Priest Sent To Leahy And Jesuit Provincial Years Prior To Rape Allegation”
Dear Editors: I write this as a huge fan of most things Ignatian. I was lucky to know and be informally mentored by a variety of the fathers at BC and elsewhere. I am not surprised that Dziak and his Jesuit superiors are being called to account for his alleged “inappropriate conduct with students.” In…
Editorial: To Promote Dialogue, Student Organizations Should Not Invite Prejudiced Speakers
Student organizations should not invite discriminatory speakers that ostracize members of the BC community and do not constructively participate in open debate. There is a consistent pattern of hateful and inappropriate speakers being invited to speak on Boston College’s campus. In March, BC Republicans hosted political scientist Hadley Arkes, who promoted conversion therapy and argued…
Op-Ed: Faculty Advancing Racial Equity Endorsement
Following the recent wave of racist incidents on Boston College’s campus and an insufficient administrative response, some BC students have raised a question: “Where are the faculty?” Many BC faculty work individually and in existing groups to challenge racism on campus. A newly formed Faculty for Justice project called Faculty Advancing Racial Equity (FARE) commits…
Being A Minority Is Not Easy, We Must Stand Together
Speaking from my experience being a Latina, I can tell you that being a minority is not easy. While I think most people today are much more aware than in the past of the struggles that minorities face, many are still not aware of the competition that minority groups tend to have with each other. …
A Bittersweet Sunset To Freshman Year
Walking from Upper Campus to the gym at 6 a.m. changes a person. One morning a few weeks ago, while walking to the gym, I witnessed possibly the most gorgeous sunrise I’ve ever seen. The sun glowed across the horizon, coloring the clouds shades of purple, orange, and pink that I’ve never seen before. Compared…
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: Week Of May 3
Thumbs Up Comfort Water Bottle Young children often have a special stuffed animal or blanket that they take with them everywhere they go. College students also have a comfort item: a reusable water bottle. Whether it’s a Hydro Flask, S’well, YETI, or a coveted UGBC collectable, reusable water bottles are always there, no matter how…
University President Rev. William P. Leahy, S.J., Issues Statement in Response to April 26 ‘Heights’ Article
The Heights article of April 26, 2021 describing allegations against Fr. Ted Dziak contains erroneous and irresponsible claims about me and my role as President of Boston College. A response is necessary.
