In the post-graffiti movement, pioneered by Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1980s New York City, street art evolved to become recognized in the fine arts world. His legacy is celebrated in “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” at the MFA.
BC celebrated the Black History Month Mass Sunday. The Mass, celebrated by Michael Davidson, was focused on overcoming racism, equality, and black history.
“In my opinion, we must respectfully juggle the fact that racism must color the way we see how amazing these activists are treated, very differently from the thoughtful leaders of the Black LIves Matter movement,” said professor C. Shawn McGuffey. “We must do both of these.”
Friday night’s celebration of Black History Month included song, dance, and poetry.
“Today we’re here celebrating Black History Month, but we know that black history is 365 days a year.”
In conclusion to Black History Month, students and faculty gathered Saturday night for food, performances, and a talk by Thaly Germain.
Student engagement is critical. As racial issues are addressed across campus and continue to be an important part of discourse, students should participate in and learn from Black History Month.
