UPDATE: Bicyclist Killed in Newton Car Crash Involving UPS Driver Identified

The Newton Police Department (NPD) identified Newton resident Alex Bohm, 57, as the bicyclist who died after a collision with a United Parcel Service (UPS) truck on Monday, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

A joint statement from Marian Ryan, district attorney of Middlesex County, and John Carmichael, chief of NPD, detailed the incident.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that a UPS truck was traveling eastbound

on Watertown St. turning left onto Bridge Street and that the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Watertown Street at the time of the crash,” the statement reads. “The driver of the UPS vehicle, a 57-year-old Newton man, remained on scene.”

NPD will work with the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section to look further into the accident, according to the statement.

The intersection where the accident occurred is along the same road as another intersection, Watertown Street, Eddy Street, and Eliot Avenue, where a large number of crashes have taken place over the last several years.

The investigation into the accident and resulting fatality remains open and ongoing, according to Ryan and Carmichael’s statement.

Fuller added that all of those connected to the crash are in her thoughts.

“At this difficult time, I am thinking first and foremost of the family and friends of the cyclist,” the statement reads. “I know people all across Newton will hold them in their thoughts.”
