Boston College women’s soccer spent most of the second half of its Thursday night game on offense. Colgate’s defense did not flinch.
And even with point-blank shots from the Eagles, goalkeeper Ella Poppinga made saves look easy as BC pressed for a goal.
The Eagles (3–1–2) shot 12 of 28 total shots on goal, but ended the game in a scoreless draw against the Raiders (1–2–3).
“We had 29 shots and only 12 of them on frame,” BC head coach Chris Watkins said. “We need to be on frame a little bit more often and in the corners a little bit more often.”
UCLA transfer Sophie Reale and freshman Emily Mara combined for 16 of the Eagles’ shots, with six missing wide.
Meanwhile, Colgate ended up drawing six fouls due to BC’s aggressiveness.
“There’s a lot of bodies flying around in the box,” Watkins said. “I think we were a little unlucky at times, but [the Raiders] were scrappy.”
Watkins asked officials to award Mara a penalty kick, claiming she was tripped by Poppinga in the box. Officials spent three minutes reviewing the play, but the call on the field stood, and no penalty was awarded.
The Eagles drew six corner kicks, however. Unfortunately for BC, it was unable to convert on any.
“We had some good looks,” Watkins said. “The services were a little bit too far out wide. We like those in really tight. We weren’t able to make those as dangerous as we would have liked.”
Three Colgate defenders—Nikki DiCaprio, Sophia Ro, and Adelaide Brislen—played the entire match.
“I was impressed with how hard [Colgate] worked,” Watkins said. “Frankly, I was really impressed with how hard we worked. It’s not easy to get 29 shots off, and most of those were in the penalty box. They just didn’t go in.”
BC lost freshman forward Sadie Mathis for the game with an apparent ankle injury minutes before halftime. Watkins and athletic trainer Kristen Allen carried Mathis off the field, and she did not return to the game.
Senior forward Sydney Segalla, whose speed came in big for BC last season, was also sidelined in Thursday night’s tie. Segalla has not played in a game this year.
