By now, you’ve (hopefully) figured out how to properly dress to brave the winter weather, whether it be wind, rain, sleet, or snow. Caring for your winter clothing, though? That’s a whole other challenge.
But fear not. Here’s some advice for caring for your winter clothing.
Salt-Stained UGGs
I, like many others, made the decision to ignore the cautionary tales and wear my UGGs as snow boots. They’re warm and fluffy—how could things go wrong?
Well, things did go wrong: I was left with soggy, salt-stained shoes. Upon seeing them, I thought it was time to part ways.
Fortunately, I learned that UGGs can be cleaned at your local dry cleaner, making your worn-out shoes look—and feel—brand-new.
The Puffer Jacket
During the winter, I have an extreme attachment to my puffer jacket. If I leave my dorm, it comes with me—at all costs.
With so much wear and exposure to the elements, it’s no understatement to say it could benefit from a good wash.
To clean your puffer jacket, first put it in the washer as normal. Then dry on low—with tennis balls. Yes, you heard that right. The tennis balls will ensure that your precious puffer dries evenly puffed.
Fur Coats (And Hats)
Fur coats—and those fur little hats—are all the rage right now. The idea of cleaning them, though, can be a little daunting.
This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the natural elements—and by the elements, I mean snow. Leaving furs out to hang in the cold and snow gives them a natural refresh.
Just make sure the snow is dry and powdery rather than wet and clumpy. Too much moisture can be bad for your coat!
Static Hair
Hats, scarves, and hoods are all essential components of proper winter layering. Unfortunately, these cold-weather necessities, plus the dry winter air, combine to create the unwanted consequence of static hair.
To solve this issue, run a dryer sheet over your hair or place one on the prongs of your hairbrush.
Remember: salt stains are temporary, winter memories are forever. With the help of these tips, take advantage of Boston’s winter beauty while staying warm.
