This past summer, Dead & Company, an American rock band formed in 2015 to preserve the infamous legacy of the Grateful Dead, commemorated the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary at a three-night concert series in San Francisco. Dead & Co. has gained traction among the newer generation of “Deadheads” through their residency at the ostentatious Las Vegas Sphere.
The Grateful Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after its lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia, passed away. Garcia was instrumental to the soul of the band. Jerry wasn’t explicitly known for his fast guitar playing but instead his unique and otherworldly method.
His improvisational style added an unpredictable energy, which was reciprocated by his bandmates. And while Garcia’s playing was often erratic, his relaxed, warm, and fluid composure was emblematic of the Dead’s appeal—a philosophical and graceful approach to life.
In Dead & Company, singer-songwriter and guitarist John Mayer takes on Garcia’s former role as lead guitarist. Mayer is widely known for his drab hits “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.” While sweet, his songs lack depth.
But Mayer’s immense commitment to the band is undeniable—it is obvious that he has done his homework. Part of Garcia’s captivating tone was attributed to built-in preamps and effect loops that were custom-made for his Doug Irwin “Wolf” and “Tiger” guitars. Mayer decided to make his own “super cool” intricate guitar weapon that follows suit: the Super Eagle II. Unfortunately, Mayer does not wield his custom guitar with the same gusto that Garcia did with his.
For Garcia, his musical talent didn’t need probing or fine-tuning—it seemed to effortlessly flow from his fingertips. His playing was hypnotic, inspired, and, most of all, a reflection of his subconscious. He used melodies as a framework, but veered away from playing a song the same way twice, leaving a lasting impression on each song he touched.
Mayer has truly tried to fill this beatific presence in Dead & Co., attempting to incorporate his own style while also being mindful of songs’ original forms. While this is no easy task, and Mayer certainly does a good job of it, his presence in Dead & Co. feels inauthentic. His performances feel like those of a Garcia impersonator—they lack true Dead spirit.
Mayer’s matriculation into Dead & Co. seems like a moment of career experimentation for him. Mayer stumbled upon the Grateful Dead in 2011 while listening to random suggestions on Pandora. This kick started a hyperfixation on experimenting with folk music and incorporating jamming into his solo music. As Mayer put it in a 2016 SiriusXM Radio interview, “I’m naturally obsessive anyway, so it suited my way of life.”
Mayer’s current role in Dead & Co. is like a teenager dying their hair—it’s just a phase. He’s hesitantly dipping his toes in the water and waiting to see if American psychedelic rock is captivating enough for him. That disconnect and lack of zeal is conveyed in the music—his playing is bluesy, slow, and clunky.
This new, disingenuous feel of Dead & Co. cannot be attributed to the presence of Mayer alone. The group’s inauthentic feel is also a result of their choice of venue: the gaudy Las Vegas Sphere. The Sphere demands incredibly high ticket prices, which are inflated when the band misleadingly and repeatedly labels its tours as “farewell.”
The Dead & Co.’s residency at the Sphere and adoption of Mayer as lead guitarist are symbolic of the theatrics and pursuit of profit that have taken the soul out of rock and roll. Dead & Co. is a cash grab, not a genuine, shared love for the music.
While I think it is admirable that Dead & Co. attempts to preserve the Grateful Dead’s legacy, it has lost track of the Dead’s original message. For a band once revered for its counterculture and off-the-beaten-path nature, its commemorative band is certainly playing for the mainstream.
In a press conference from 1987, the band was already aware of heading in the wrong direction commercially.
“Has success ruined the Grateful Dead?” Garcia asked. “Yeah.”
John • Oct 10, 2025 at 7:07 pm
Legacy schmegacy. The Dead were never about legacies. To a man, they were always about playing the music. Period. Why do you think they allowed taping? Once they played it, they didn’t care what you did with it. And Mayer is great for a lot of reasons but the best is this… he looks like he loves it so much that he’d do it for $20 and dinner.
Chris Higley • Oct 10, 2025 at 7:02 pm
I saw the Dead in ’94 and sadly it was clear that Jerry was going fast. Heartbreaking. When he died, it was the end of the Grateful Dead. Since then, there has been no shortage of good stuff eminating from the surviving members, but not the Dead. Since then, younger generations have become Deadheads. That’s fantastic, but Jerry’s death was an incurable loss. I miss you terribly, Jerry. Thank you for all you gave us.
Mike Lugassy • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:43 pm
Wow that was harsh!
Did someone steal your lunch out of the office fridge? I think you need to take a few steps back and reevaluate. John and the boys have been playing some great music. I think Jerry would be happy the his contributions to the music are still drawing 60,000 people to the park.
Please consider the following:
“ Once in a while, you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right”
Be Kind 😊

Johnson Mayer is one of the best guitarist of our time. I think it was a genius move for the legendary band and soon to be legendary artist and guitarist to join forces. The Greatful Dead has been mainstream since the 80’s, not because their sound and message changed, society changed. Gaining a new fan base is evident that they are doing the right thing. GOD BLESS… JESUS LUVZ U ✌🏽

Dude, it’s over. We are in the Tribute Era. Rock n Roll never expected to be Old but it is and Rock Stars die, so to keep the money machine rolling, they need Tribute stars IE: The Eagles. Rush, Foreigner, Queen, Journey, The who….not the band we remember but oh well, I can say I saw them is what we have now. I listen to Iron Maiden, the one and only band that never showed signs of aging
Ralph J Buonome Jr • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:45 pm
The author is a “cork sniffer”, I was thete to know when it was cool. Most deadheads didn’t like Jerry’s vocals in the 90s and looked back to the 70s. I didn’t appreciate Mayer until I heard him playing with dead and friends, he is one of the most competent American guitarists alive today. Try playing some of his solo stuff on your guitar, and you will see how his skills are way beyond normal. Can’t think of one guy who could do better filling that jerry sized hole.
Sassy • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:09 pm
Dude, did you just wake up after a bad trip or something? Mayer has been doing this for literally TEN YEARS now! It’s not just a passing phase. And I’m sorry, but Mayer is a better musician and guitarist than Jerry was when he was that age.
Mary • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:06 pm
Respectfully disagree. I think Mayer is authentic and has grown his talent exponentially over the last 10 years. Honestly, he is better each time I see him.
Eric • Oct 10, 2025 at 5:47 pm
Absolutely ridiculous take on Mayer. He may be one of the finest guitar players in the entire country right now. You’re just a fucking hater. Of course the scene is different, at least it’s still a scene that thousands of people get to enjoy.
Terri Benasutti • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:49 pm
I’m sorry Mary but you I believe that you are so wrong. I will state that I was shocked when John was, at first, taking what appeared to be Jerry’s place, and quite frankly anti Dead and Co. but god damn….I changed my mind and realized he’s awesome! This isn’t the Grateful Dead. It never will be, it’s Dead and Co. I can say that I am one of the lucky ones who got on the bus in the 80s (wish I could have see them earlier but I guess that would mean I’d be older too! 😂) We should all be GRATEFUL for Dead and Co and Bobby keeping it alive! And let’s not forget…Bobby is 77 yrs old and still rockin!

Absolutely a trash take. The author either has no idea what they are talking about or they’re just a hater. I’ve seen Jerry 65 times and Dead & Co. About 20 times. John keeps the music alive and makes this old head very happy.

Definitely missed the mark on this one. Dead & Co provide a much desired and enjoyable experience to many. Why yuck their yum? Very reductive to say that the band is band because JM has written many derivative pop songs (albeit derivative songs w/ killer guitar licks). He is a MONSTER guitar player in a live setting especially, and he has such a killer dynamic onstage w/ Bob Weir.
Tb • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:28 pm
Could not disagree more. Dead &Co. Is far superior not only in sound but Mayer is a much better lyricist than Jerry could ever dream to be.
I said what I said!
Kevin B • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:40 pm
The author seems to have a limited mind and knowledge about what he talks about. The grateful legacy is just exactly perfect. All musicians who have been interpreting and play the music are welcome to give their version. That’s is the most inviting aspect of the post 1995 GD .. still the songs and music lends itself to keep being played and enjoyed and loved same as classical music. The melodies and songs are open to all the world..
Scott • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:47 pm

I love the music and it’s all we got now so I say enjoy the ride and improvisation they all do and have fun with the visuals of the Sphere. I took my family and they got it. Not the true Dead show experience but it’s pretty awesome and Mayer brings his own style to the stage. I can’t wait for the next show. You can be thrifty with Vegas by going on a Thursday night and staying at the Flamingo right next door! See you there!

So this is an article to say that Mayer isn’t Jerry?? Does ANYONE dispute that?
The article is lame, as is the “point.”
I can’t wait to read your reviews of JRAD, Dark Star, and the seemingly endless number of Dead cover bands that exist in almost every city.
I don’t see Dead and Co to “pretend” I’m seeing Jerry. I see them bc I love the music, and for my $$, it’s the best version out there today.
How about we stop hating on people who love the music? Nobody thinks they’re seeing The Grateful Dead.
Maybe your next article can be how Otiel isn’t Phil. Breaking news journalism…
In the meantime, while you and your ilk sit back taking shots and talking about what it used to be, the rest of are just gonna keep communing at our local Dead cover bands and perhaps at a Dead and Co show, enjoying what’s available to us today.
Linda • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:18 pm
Jerry Garcia is the only front man for the Dead…I get it people want that vibe back…but it’s gone forever let it rest and enjoy the amazing library of music Jerry left behind..Mayer not my cup of tea he doesn’t fit jmo…Bob is great but getting tired you can see it..

Seems a strange article – no one can harm a legacy, just create a new one. I have seen a few D and C shows. They are entertaining but still a cover band. How about Bob and John and Barlow do some new songs. Bob did some fine music outside the GD like Bobby and the Midnights.
Define Good • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:14 pm
I agree with you on Bobby’s music. I loved Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby & the Midnites, but one problem with your suggestion, Barlow died in 2018.
John J. Urban • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:39 pm
John Barlow passed away years ago…. would need a seance, of sorts, to get his input nowadays….
Ronbo • Oct 10, 2025 at 4:04 pm
Dead and Compamy are not the Grateful Dead which the author can surmise. I listen constantly to Sirius Dead channel that you get the best and worst of recorded concerts. Davis Limeaux has created the consummate Dead archive that “WE” can maintain out dedication and fascination.
DCo does maintain spirit through Weir and Hart collaboration with Mayer and the other musicians. The article is badmouthing Mayer and the collaboration unjustifyibly.
I saw DCo 3 days at the Sphere in June 2024 which was the best concert from a visual, sound, audience, and music standpoint. Instead, it lacked the wall of sound, Brett Mydland vocals, Phil Lesh riffs and old Dead uniqueness.
BUT, the Sphere dome sight and sound combined with a more jazz full rendition of Dead classics ia a new unique. Historical Dead graphics are alive just as contemporary as they were in the 70s thru 90s, with a little help from Lucas ILS.
Jerry was never considered one the greatest guitarists but was a great stylist and creator of an epic genre. Mayer is an exceptional guitar technician and his DCo contribution also exceptional and at times exceeding Jerry’s technical ability.
One sound unduplicative is that of Tiger and Jerry’s pedal and amp setup. So any comparison is out oof the question.
I’ll certianly be returning in 26 looking forward to hear Mayers musical input too.

Eric • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:55 pm
Such a sad view. All of your arguments fall apart under simple scrutiny. Your only audiences for this nonsense are the Swifty haters and Jerry purists. Dead & Co has been together longer than the Beatles and nearly as long as Led Zeppelin so implying this is a phase demonstrates your cluelessness. John is exceptionally deferential to the original Grateful Dead (often correcting people who mistakenly refer to D&C as the GD). He usually refers to Jerry as Mr.Jerry Garcia. John would agree with you on one thing – there is no-one who can replace Jerry. There are two opinions/views you failed to take into consideration – Mr. Bob Weir and Mr. Mickey Hart who have toured with the band for 10 years. Bobby says he is focused on the GD legacy carrying on past his time and he obviously sees D&C as the best way to do that. Bob and Mickey’s perspectives crush your myopic view. As someone who has seen both bands many times, D&C puts on quality shows and while some are better than others, there is more consistency to their shows (and yes, there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert). Lastly, no-one (Trey, Warren etc.) has captured the Dead magic like John Mayer. He is one of the best guitarists alive, adds great energy and passion to the band and the GD music, and has said he wants to carry on as long as Bobby and Mickey wish. Throwing shade on Mayer’s solo work and the Sphere (the best venue for a concert ever created) shows your out of touch.

Jerry had a unique style that no one can duplicate. We are in a different season, in a different millennium, different and unique musicians playing. Let’s move on.
Eric Gittens • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:49 pm
I dont like the fact that they keep titling their shows farewell as a way to trick people, but I do like John Mayor and his playing with the Dead & co. I just went to see them this April and it was an amazing experience.
As far as the band goes, The grateful dead is gone dude. To me this is just a tribute band. People come and go in tribute bands all the time. If Jon Mayor wants to do something else he can. Jerry started JGB and he had multiple projects outside of the dead.
I do appreciate your perspective though. It can be tough to accept that something isn’t the same as it used to be and Jon Mayor may well be phoning it in(i don’t think so) but at this point the Grateful Dead is legendary. Nothing is gonna kill their vibes
Peter Cooper • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:48 pm
Maher cannot be Jerry and needs to chart his own course via a more bluesy style of guitar playing etc. His total immersion into the music is very impressive in my view.
DeadCo traveled all over US between 2015 and 2023 but the Sphere provides an unmatched venue to take full advantage of the vast archive of Dead iconography.
Weir and Hart provide the historical backbone but the others-Chimenti, Burbidge, and Lane have mastered the Dead ethos and provide energy to shows.
DeadCo is the best post GD band to carry the torch, although I did like Furthur a lot in their brief time.
It’s all rolls into one!

I don’t think John Mayer has tried to replicate Jerry’s playing, I think that he has way more respect than that. He fell down the rabbit hole like so many before and after. They are not the grateful dead but it is awesome watching talented musicians who obviously love the music as much as the rest of us. As far as the Sphere,no other band is better suited for that venue. Rock on

Paul C. • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:38 pm
Well, in my opinion, the GD spent about 20 years sullying their own legacy/reputation/etc., so who’s to blame Bobby and the boys from beating a dead horse. I’m convinced they were only half/heartedly working at it from 1975 on. I don’t blame them. It’s hard to see that in perspective when you’re in it. But years later, listening to the GD, it’s hard to get very excited about much of their post 1975 work.
bill • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:36 pm
It’s Bob that’s ruining the music. He should hang up his guitar. He can’t keep up anymore. Dead music will always be played. I personally hope billy strings will start an electric band and team up w some great improv musicians to carry the torch forward.

Well, that’s certainly an opinion.

Katia • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:10 pm
Your actual “cash grab” complaints are better placed on Ticketmaster and Live Nation. They control the ticket prices and the scalping. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets at face value, they are right on par with everyone else’s prices, maybe even a bit lower. (This includes Sphere.)
But Ticketmaster has a vested interested in allowing bots to buy up ticket blocks because they get a percentage of every resale ticket. And anytime you find “Platinum Official” tickets, you should know that those were fave value tickets that Ticketmaster bought themselves and are reselling at astronomical prices. Because they can. That has ZERO to do with Dead and Co or any other band. So stop with this tired bit about the band running a cash grab. They’re in the same industry as all the other musicians selling tickets and merch at the same prices.
I couldn’t care less if you like the band better with Jerry or John. Go or don’t go. But stop bitching about the way the economy is today as of John personally had a hand in making it this way.
Cosmic Charlie • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:06 pm
What a pointlessly mean spirited article. I’ve been seeing the dead since 1977. I don’t really follow the new iterations of the band but the fact that they have brought hundreds of thousands of new fans to the bands music seems by itself proof that this author is a fool and a joker
Jim • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:46 pm
There are plenty of tribute bands that will keep the music alive and do a great job and don’t charge $500 a ticket. They’re all over the world. I first saw the Dead 3/26:73. And the music never stopped.
Leonard Cooper • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:03 pm
I was at the Sphere for one show in 2024. While spectacular it was a good “Dead” cover band. I’m sure the young who never saw the real Dead it was nervana. There’ll never be another Gerry. Mayer can play but I was not impressed. I listened to their concert album from 2023. It doesn’t touch “Live Dead” or “Skeletons in the Closest “. Thankfully there thousands of recordings of the original.
There’s nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.
Greg • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:02 pm
What a terrible perspective. My wife and I met a 15 year old girl at citi field back in 2023. She was so excited to experience the Grateful Dead through Dead & Co with her grandfather. Les • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:56 pm
I’ve been seeing the Dead since 1973. Mayer is the best thing that has happened to the Dead since Jerry’s passing. He has energized the band, and although he plays in a different style than Jerry, his soulful skills on the guitar are, with very limited exception, unsurpassed. In addition, his vocals have only enhanced the group. Honestly, if there is a weak spot, it is Weir’s vocals. He, like many of our rock heroes from that era, have lost the sparkle in their voice. I have been to Dead and Co. shows since their first go round and I will continue to attend. The author of this article, and many who have commented are clearly not true fans of the Dead and probably never were.

Thomas Plummer • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:48 pm
Mayer is an excellent ambassador for The Grateful Dead legacy.
I do not see evidence that they are “ playing for the mainstream “ , there is no attempt at new music nor is any one person the focal point of the band . I do believe they could’ve done a better job with ticket pricing, however but other than that, I disagree with most of your assertions in the article.

You can’t experience something that ended before you were born. I’ll never experience Beethoven the way Beethoven meant his music to be heard. Likewise…
Edmund Jones • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:30 pm
I’ve seen the Dead and dead related projects about 200 times the grateful Dead, the other ones, Phil and Friends, the Dead, and dead and company, they all had their Plus or minuses but still we were there for the music
no matter who was out
front playing lead it was all a good scene, so just go for the music and don’t worry about the other stuff
Jon Wells • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:20 pm
They should have wrapped it up a long time ago. It has become a total joke, and nothing at all like the good ole days.
Stephen B. Nocita • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:06 pm
Jerry would never have agreed to a long-term residency at The Sphere, nor the outrageous prices for the GG Park concerts.
For that matter, neither would Phil, who reflected The Dead’s legacy through his Terrapin restaurant.
Dead & Co has become the epitome of a money grab, a true shame!
Scott Richter • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:02 pm
Wow – a College age student writer who has never seen Jerry or the Grateful Dead dumping on a guitar virtuoso who has shown nothing but admiration, respect, and empathy for the legacy of Jerry Garcia and the GD Community at large. Shame on The Heights editing team for taking this to print and shame on BC for enabling writers to dabble. I appreciate and support Ms. Del Sesto’s right to share her view, but writers should keep their critical opinions to subjects they fully understand.
Raphael • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:32 pm
Actually hes spot on. The band before Dead and CO, Further was light years better than Dead and CO. They are the most boring form of Grateful Dead… John tries but sucks at Gerry. I would rather see half a dozen Dead cover bands or Dark Star Orchestra the best dead cover band there is.
Kim • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:02 pm
I agree with you, you summed it up well. I’ve seen Further and Dead &. Co ( ofcourse the Grateful Dead) I like Furthur it had a different crowd. People were laid back the band seemed to be going well. Then Dead & co.
I never really cared for them but did go to the Sphere to see what has happened to the band. $$$$$$ went thru my head.
Everything is Grateful Dead now paint colors of the Dead. Jerry wasn’t after this and it’s defiantly is Not the aura Jerry gave to the band. At least I was born at the right time to experience the original long strange trip.
Stephen B. Nocita • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:09 pm
So true!
I’ve been following The Dead for 50+ years, and find the current iteration of Dead & Co outrageous and disturbing, e.g., Sphere Residency, outrageous prices for GG Park concerts, and other truly money grabbing offenses to The Dead’s legacy!

As a fan for the last 57 years, as someone who has seen the band in all its manifestations, I just have to say that this author is clueless.
Jim • Oct 10, 2025 at 3:03 pm
I agree, did the author ever see Jerry before he died to see the thousands of note coming out of his guitar?
As far as prices go, all the shows of well known artists are $1000 for the best seats and $300 to sit in back. Think David Byrne and The Who.
John Smith • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:53 pm
100%. John Mayer has no business there.
OH • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:33 pm
You undermine your argument by making it clear you only engaged with Mayer’s music on a surface level and did very little research of his skill. If any. It’s very evident. I don’t blame you, there is so much music in this world and he’s not necessarily been in the mainstream the past decade. He is also certainly not for everyone, which is okay. But if you are going to write an opinion article, you owe it to yourself and your audience to actually do your homework. Otherwise there’s nothing different between this and some random tweet.
Al • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:22 pm
I’m not a huge fan of Mayer in the band, but that’s only because I was/am 100% a Jerry head and it’s honestly hard for me to listen to most guitarists who take that lead guitar role. Jerry’s style and what he brought to the band just can’t be replicated, or even partially matched. So, because of that, I don’t listen much to subsequent iterations, although I have given the current iteration a couple goes. I think what the author actually does get right is the whole choice of venue and multiple farewells parts. When you go see a dead cover band in a little bar or small venue, they may not match the magic of the music from the Jerry days, but at least they offer some level of intimacy and experimentalism that gives some authenticity.

Paul Kay • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:31 pm
This article is so far off base. Mayer is an incredible guitar player. He never set out to replace Jerry, but rather to channel some of his spirit. He intentionally holds back his playing in respect to both Jerry and Bobby. Guest guitarist are allowed free range, while JM remains reserved. This was brought up in a discussion. I swear, mist Dead and Co bashers have never actually listened to them. JM and the gang gave turnedvout some far superior jams/versions of the songs. In a lot of ways, Dead and Co is what the Gratefull Dead should have been; clean, sober and respecting the audience by putting on a good show. The Dead were notorious for putting on some pretty bad shows due to drugs, but Deadheads can’t bring themselves to admit it.
Dead and Co has kept the music alive and introduced it to new generations of fans, just as Jerry would gave liked.
The author of this article should have just admitted they don’t like John Mayer.
The crusty old Deadheads are not always a welcoming group to new fans either. I’ve seen some baloney about Mayer fans being unkind, but my experience is at various Dead and Co concerts, the old timers are very unwelcoming. As if they have the lock on all things Dead because they saw Jerry. Jerry would be very disappointed by the unwelcoming folks. It is supposed to be a fun, shared, one big happy family feel.
Donna • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:32 pm
Not all old timers are unwelcoming in fact my husband & I have never witnessed anyone being unwelcoming to new ones coming. All our adult children & friends have been into everything Dead as our grandchildren. The younger people ask questions, we gladly share with anyone our experiences. We are in our 70’s & thankful the music continues.

Hayden • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:15 pm
Just to point out the obvious, this article is a textbook example of click-bait to the max (she duped me too with that title). This article is a short-sighted commentary on a band, the original likes, this young lady has probably never seen. She probably also hasn’t thought about the shear energy and coordination it takes to put on a show of this magnitude, for many members 70, 80+ years old nonetheless. I can’t blame her though for growing up in a society where cash has inflated the ticket price of lady gaga concert to over $1k. That aint the deads fault, thats a sign of the times babe. Also, if you want to really know what’s going on in John’s head, you should ask him. Comparing his honoring of the dead to the phase of a teenager is likened to an insult. In reality, you have no idea what this means to him, because if you did, you’d probably include that essential piece in this article. Kindly, try to put in the real work to cover the whole story next time, that is, unless your just looking for a cash grab of click bait.
Farrell Timlake • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:10 pm
Respectfully disagree. The music carries on through numerous cover acts, some better than others, some truly amazing. This is music meant to be played live and in this case it is Bob Weir choosing to play with these musicians. I followed the Grateful Dead for over a decade as a hardcore taper so I feel like I do have a good perspective on when the music is hitting those magical moments of inspired improvisational sync. In the case of Dead and Co, yes, they lock in beautifully and do truly carry on the spirit of the music, in my honest opinion. The John Mayer haters typically criticize things that have nothing to do with his playing. The look on his face. Dumping Taylor. You name it. But when you hear him play and feel the enthusiasm of his take on the music, then you know. This is what the music is supposed to be. Live. Fun. Improvisational. Inspired.

I have been a Grateful Dead fan since Mid 1970s and I think John Mayer has done an amazing job not replacing Jeri but bringing his own individualism to a classic band who needed someone like John Mayer to be able to continue to be as amazing as they are. I think this is a terrible review and if you have seen John Mayer in person with the Grateful Dead, you would see how grateful the fans are. John Mayer is one of the best guitarist around who pours his heart into playing.

This guy is an idiot and knows nothing. It’s all about keeping the music alive and I’m here for it. My first show was in 87, no one is Jerry or will ever be Jerry and Mayer is by no means trying to replace him. He is an amazing guitarist and the respect he has for the music and the legacy is apparent. Sure, I wish tickets weren’t as expensive as they are but I’ll always find a way to see them. I love that John has brought new fans into the Dead community. Let there be songs to fill the air.
Tony • Oct 10, 2025 at 12:51 pm
What an ice cold take. Expecting a guitar player perfectly mimic Jerry is ridiculous. And yet, Mayer bringing his own style is just not tolerated by some.
Bobby Mickey accepted John for a reason, and having seen a dozen or more Dead and Co shows, the spirit is absolutely there. Being a hater is completely against everything the Dead stand for. This article proves you just don’t get it, and that’s fine.

In the new book Loud and Clear the author’s research revealed Jerry openly discussed wanting to do some type of residency in a geodesic dome. This was in the 70’s. And, the author claims sphere Vegas really is just an indirect result of the evolution begun from the Dead’s wall of sound. So, basically, you’re confused and you probably should just let the music play.

Seen both the Jerry version and JM version. There’s no comparison. It truly ended with Garcia’s death. How do we know? In a decade of Dead & Co. we’ve seen zero new tunes generated by Mayer; he continues to rest on Garcia’s songs and laurels. If JM era was anything more than a cover band of the original band, we’d have heard new and exciting material. Even when Bruce Hornsby was a member of the GD, they played some of Hornsby’s penned tunes. Not with John Mayer. His original music doesn’t fit with the GD genre. So we can plainly see they’ve drawn on nostalgia from the Garcia era to market their product. John Mayer is just a hired employee to play guitar; and we all know there are plenty of Jerry clones out there who can play Garcia style.
Vincent R Palazzo • Oct 10, 2025 at 2:18 pm
I can never say anything disparaging about any member of the Grateful Dead after giving me and countless others years of pure magic. I’m 63 and saw my first show in 1979 in my hometown of Binghamton NY and after that I was on board traveling all over the country until the end in 95. I’ve never really had any desire to see Dead and Company. I checked out their shows on YouTube when they first started. I think John Mayer is very talented in his own right but with Dead and Co. I didn’t hear or feel emotional connection that I had in the past. For me I felt that vibe energy with Phil and Friends the most. Seeing a different diverse group of musicians bringing a fresh energy and exploring these songs with Phil was the very thing that I was drawn to in the beginning. I saw many different lineups with Phil and it was always the experience of taking the music and songs to new directions. Again that’s just my opinion and all that matters is enjoying yourself and the music no matter who’s playing it

I’m happy with this article. Mayer brought so many of his deranged fans into the Grateful Dead aura that have completely ruined the scene. They have no idea of the Real Grateful Dead, often calling Jerry a junkie and discrediting his involvement, saying John is way better. It makes me absolutely sick.

Then the Sphere shows , had a bro tell me at the end of 2024 if they come back to Vegas that he would come out so the band did I bought 2 tickets for opening nite in 25 bro didnt show so I went can see the Sphere from the house went and it sucked I dont need all the visuals . This is from someone whos first show was 1972 till 95 over 250 shows .

Sounds like you had a bad experience or two at one of these shows. Ive been to over 20 dead and co. shows and never had a single interaction like that. Stay open to the general perspective of even people like me in their late twenties/early thirties, which is most of us honor and recognize Jerry’s greatness. John is just trying his best.
Luca Croft • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:57 am
It appears this analysis comes from a very surface-level understanding of the Grateful Dead movement. It misses the entire purpose of Dead and Co: to Not Fade Away and to make sure the Music Never Stops.
Not only are the musicians in Dead & Co criminally mischaracterized in this article, but so is the goal of Grateful Dead’s movement as a whole. The fact is, every single member in Dead and Co. feels an intense responsibility to carry on the legacy of improvisational music as its popularity naturally declines with time. In fact, I would argue John Mayer feels the MOST responsibility out of all the band members! To say that Mayer makes depthless music and is merely a fanboy completely undermines his status as one of the best improvisational guitarists of our generation. It ignores his impact with the John Mayer Trio, where he set aside his “depthless” music (and all the money it attracted) to solely play blues, and it disregards his extremely advanced knowledge of music theory.
Yes, tickets should be cheaper, and I agree, there is certainly a corporate element that is disruptive to the overall Grateful Dead experience.
Nevertheless, Mayer is an excellent fit for the music of the Dead. The only major difference between his approach to improvisation and Jerry’s is his blues influence, and it has nothing to do with “clunkiness” (there is nothing clunky about his playing).
Jerry was a bluegrass banjo teacher, so naturally he leans towards chromatic licks and frequently switching between registers, while Mayer favors soulful bends. All that matters is the music is kept alive, and there is no doubt in my mind that Mayer and the rest of Dead and Co. are doing exactly that. If you were a true Deadhead, you’d be thankful for his efforts.
ChiefRDuke • Oct 10, 2025 at 12:31 pm
Wrong. The article is spot on . The Golden Gate Park fiasco this past summer was the final nail in the coffin. “VIP Golden Road experience” package was enough to make you sick to your stomach. The whole thing just depressing and awful. Anyone with a desire to recall the true spirit of the Grateful Dead should watch Sunshine Daydream, 8/27/72 from Vaneta Oregon…legendary show. Band stepping up to help some friends of the band out, Chuck Kesey, Ken’s brother, who needed a little help with the dairy farm. The Dead did stuff like this all the time back then. Very organic, community experience that was the essence of who the Dead were. Watching rich people shell out hundreds of dollars to go have a “VIP” experience with their craft beers and wearing their favorite tie die with designer sunglasses while Mayer bounces around on stage stomping out Garcias legacy for good was a pathetic spectacle but cheered on for all the wrong reasons by misguided people like yourself.
Gerry • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:53 am
Stop whining. Jerry is dead and obviously it will never be the same. Nor is there a counter-culture as was in the 60s and 70s. The war is over. D&C is excellent and have created something very special. If the Dead fans couldn’t afford the Sphere there wouldn’t be anyone at the shows. Enjoy the amazing thing they’ve created and you can still listen to the Jerry tapes and hear him in his glory.
Chad B • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:35 am
Yawn.
For those of us who are too young to have seen Jerry. (I was 10 when he died) I’m pretty happy to have this iteration to see. I don’t put them on instead of Jerry’s live shows, but it’s a great chance to connect with the command have a great time listening to the music play.
To try and have a hot take like this is a waste of time and tiresome. Don’t participate if you don’t enjoy it.
Nothing will tarnish Jerry’s legacy in music, it’s frankly insane to think otherwise.
Mage • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:35 am
Bobby and Mickey are happy with who they chose to join them to continue playing this timeless music and that’s good enough for me and thousands of other fans.
John Mayer brings a heartfelt dedication and his impressive skills to the mix and pays tribute to Jerry’s legacy with sincere respect and honor. The vibe I get at Dead and Co. shows is the same love and communal joy that I’ve always felt at Grateful Dead concerts, Other Ones, Further, Phil and Friends, etc.
Everything is more expensive these days, get over it and join the Heart of Gold Band.
All Dead and Co. shows I’ve ever seen have been free- generosity and miracles live on in the human spirit if we choose to see it.
“No one’s noticed but the bands’ all packed and gone…were they ever here at all? But we kept on dancin…” 🎶✨️🌈💜
Rico • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:33 am
Right off the bat, I must call BS because the author is wrong in many of their assumptions. First off, no one was really excited about JM until we actually heard the music and it was impressive. I don’t care who you are. Mayer’s blues chops fit with this band so well because at its basis, the dead is a blues band. The fit is practically perfect in every way.
Then the author goes off on the sphere which is actually the venue they were searching for their entire career. Perfect sound with amazing visuals was the holy grail that the wall of sound was built to create. Not only are the sound and visuals perfect but the fans travel to see the band rather than the band traveling to them. Garcia would have been so amazingly psychedelic!
You’re just trying to be contrary in this piece. Either that or you’re trying to sound like the ultimate deadhead but you fell way short based on my points above.

I love the music and will always be a DH no matter who plays, recreates, or sings the music. Mayer did a wonderful job and since he was there to fill in, we all got to see them play again. Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the music. Dead forever❤️
jim himenez • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:23 am
I loved the GD when i started following them in 1985. It was a blast. In 2023 we went to their concert @ Darien Lake in suburban Buffalo, NY. The ticket prices were $85.00 each for decent seats. In 2024 when they came back, this time to Saratoga, NY the tickets went up to almost 300.00 each for comparable seats. Bob Weir is a great character but his voice is cooked – sounds terrible. When the writer described it as a “money grab” he was spot on. Mayer, in my opinion has done a wonderful job mimicking Jerry. The reality is that music has changed, it’s about choreography dancing and sampling old music and using auto tune so it all sounds the same. It’s all heavily commercialized and i hate it. Who’s going to be the next Dead, Eagles, Alman Bros, Pink Floyd or the Doors. Our best days are way behind us I’m affraid.

The author obviously never a Dead Head, he plainly just don’t get it. No, Dead & Co is not the GD, how could they be? Yes, they earn big cash, but that’s just a statement of the current live music situation. So they’re supposed to slash prices? Why would they do that? It is what it is, we got what we got and we’re fortunate to have anything Dead related. I got on the bus in ’70, have seen many.
ChiefRDuke • Oct 10, 2025 at 12:44 pm
Doesn’t get it 🤣🤣🤣 ….please enlighten everyone as to what “it” is exactly. Perfect example of why I loved the music but found most of the fans insufferable. The only ones I could tolerate were the tapers, who were there for the music, not to lecture people about if they get “it” or not. Pathetic
Quinten Dragstedt • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:19 am
I think that there is definitely something to be said for the corporatization of Dead & Co. and their tours; I agree with you that much of the essence has been lost to “selling out:” playing in the sphere, it was $600 to get in the door at GD60, and the countless “farewell tours.” However, to claim that Mayer doesn’t care, or to describe the music as clunky or slow, is incredibly disingenuous.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And because some agree and some don’t doesn’t make it right or wrong. Being a deadhead was and is a gift that’s defined much of my life and philosophical approach to living it! Having followed the Dead since the early 70s one thing is clear- they were always evolving. I believe (even thought I have no right to speak for him) Jerry would enjoy hearing John’s interpretations of his music. Yes it’s a money grab, but they do appear to honestly enjoy playing together and each other’s company. The uniqueness of the experience of being a deadhead was the community and of course the music that permitted mental interstellar travel without the need for an overnight bag! Dead & CO’s music, for me doesn’t quite get me there but there are times when it’s close. And the community is as vibrant as ever. Jerry was a once in a lifetime gift, to expect a reincarnation is a bit silly. Enjoy what’s being presented, if it’s not your thing don’t go. After all no one was ever forced onto the bus!

As someone who was fortunate enough to see Jerry when I was just a wee lass, I’ve found Dead and Co. to be a big disappointment. So many of the young fans care nothing for the music. For them it’s just an opportunity to get wasted and very loud. How is that conducive to listening to music? My feeling is this iteration of the Dead don’t care about their true fans, and the Dead are nothing without their fans.
I’d much rather save my money and my time and listen to a fifty year old recording of Jerry.

Baloney. Does anyone really believe A) Jerry can be replaced OR B) that Bob & Mickey would trust just anybody to keep the music from stopping? Criticising this bold move to have Dead & Co. continue to keep us heads in the game for another decade is sad. Not a cash-grab at all….economy of scale. Sure, my first ticket in the 80’s was $25 but my $150 Sphere ‘cheap seat’ got me way more visuals than I expected. So, considering buying a car is more than the 6-fold increase in my ticket from then til now, we should be grateful for what we’re getting.

I got on the bus with 14 shows of the Grateful Dead in the 1990s. I went through my days between until 2015 and Dead & Co thankfully arrived. Since then Ive seen over 25 D&C shows, including 10 shows at the Sphere…I cant say I love LV, but the Sphere is something I am grateful Im alive for…truly amazing.
But what Im most grateful for is the greatest guitarist in the world and really of my life time, I was born in 69, John Mayer is in and leading the band I love the most. And lets be honest, he brought the gals back. The shows in SF for the 60th were amazing and to have Billy Strings, Trey and Simpson open and sit in was amazing.
Mayer is a true virtuoso and the best jam band guitarist on tye stage today!..period end of story. I just want to thank Bobby and Mickey for letting us be a part of this amazing ride.
I cant wait to see D&C again…Johnny is and will be the bridge to the Dead living on forever…and that something to be Grateful for today!

If John Mayer is the greatest guitarist in your lifetime, you clearly do not listen to enough music
John E MARCELLINO • Oct 10, 2025 at 10:47 am
I’ll start my comments the way most of you have I’ve been to 120 plus Grateful Dead shows with Jerry ,50JGB shows.. all my dead buddies told me go check out dead and company they’re excellent blah blah blah.. sorry after all these years I have not spent one penny or seen one dead and company show EVER.. I’ve heard the tapes it’s mediocre at best.. even Fare thee Well (which I also attended in Chicago) was meh…WE SAW THE REAL THING AND IT WAS EPIC . I’M NOT GOING TO RUIN MY LIFETIME OF MEMORIES WATCHING THE MONEY GRAB.. WE HAD OUR DAYS IN THE SUN.. NOW WE HAVE OUR MEMORIES AND THE RECORDINGS.. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY DANCE IN YOUR LIVING ROOM W 5.1 surround sound and a cold Heineken and you’re 60-in plasma.. much more satisfying anyway..PEACE
BakedPotatoHead • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:17 am
Ditto.
I followed them from ‘72-‘77. My first show cost me $6.
And I can unequivocally say, There is NOTHING Like a Grateful Dead Concert!
PS. I appreciate John Mayer. He’s a great player.
And I appreciate all who carry on the Grateful Dead legacy.
Rico • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:40 am
Cool. Stay at home. More tickets for the rest of us!

This is such a weird article. The author was born in the mid 2000s and is a current college student, who could have never seen the Grateful Dead. Similarly, I wasn’t born in time to see them before Jerry died but I can’t understand this amount of vitriol from a 19 year old woman. I suppose if you only care about clicks, it’s popular to be a hater.

I have been to many Grateful Dead concerts through their decades. I’m always open to new bands carrying on the music and putting their own exploratory touch on things.
I’ve been to all the reincarnations and some were better than others. I really enjoyed Dead and Company. Mayer would get his guitar howling and have to be reeled in many times. Like it or not, the place was undeniably grooving. Granted, there were many times when the music should/could have been more upbeat. To say they “sucked” or “Mayer sucks” to me is ridiculous.
I and many others enjoyed their run and I would no doubt see them again if things aligned.
PROHUMAN • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:58 am
The only thing agreeable about this trash article is the Money Grab part. It’s unfortunate but true.
Wizard • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:55 am
Dead & Co is nothing but a cover band, and not even a good one at that. Mayer is talented but not in the right way for a jam band. Bobby, bless his soul, is just a shell of himself at this point and seeing him on stage feels like some weekend at Bernie’s type nonsense. It’s all very sad.
The best moments from their 60th anniversary shows were when Sturgil, Billy, and Trey joined, because they are proper guitar players who have soul and know their way around a jam.
I could not imagine spending money to watch such a feeble attempt to recreate the magic with inferior musicians. If I want to see a GD cover band there are better options out there.
I’ve seen the Dead while Garcia was still alive, that time has passed, and so too should Dead & Co.
Cassie Griggs • Oct 10, 2025 at 10:34 am
You’re a shitty person…
Leah • Oct 10, 2025 at 10:53 am
Please don’t say that. Wizard is giving their honest opinion, and it’s completely legitimate. Being a Deadhead doesn’t mean you are a member of cult who can never criticize the band. Go with the flow, yes, but don’t let your brain fall out of your head.
Have a Grateful Day!
Rico • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:44 am
This take is so far removed from legitimate criticism, it’s unbelievable. The criticism in the original piece is off base and wrong on so many levels.

Crazy is a suspectThe writer is barely old enough to have seen jerry, who was phenomenal. But was not as perfect as this.Article made it seem it seems she must have some older.Only jerry heads around her to write this article. in fact, debt and company is not the grateful dead. It’s dead in company, and it’s the continuing members’ wish to do just that continue.Doing what they love to do.Which is play music, and they’ve put together quite a good group.
Also considering Bobby and Mickey are not spring chickens, they do a pretty d*** good job. It’s unfortunate to see articles like this. Because John is one of Jerry’s biggest fans. Actually helped develop Jerry’s sound in the later 80s. And 90s as a young up and coming guitar tech.
John has grabbed this bull by the horns and attempted to do his very best to continue the legacy and crank out quality music. As the band grows together, john’s guitar work is impeccable. John is not on heroin, which was always the elephant in the room.
Will tonight be on? Will it be off? Will the lyrics get butchered with an entire half show? will the set be slow and half asleep oops… speedball, at halftime intermission , here we go, and there’s actually none of that.
And it’s really a good thing, even though a lot of jerry’s original spirit comes out of that turmoil post pig pen era. He does not have off nights anywhere near what his predecessor did and provides a very professional yet,Improvisational rich show, which embodies the grateful dead spirit of no show being the same. so, it’s still a unique experience Every time. not to mention he also put the video work together as he was the director for all of the sphere work?
He has been preserving other things from the grateful dead legacy, not tearing them down, not putting them in cold storage, but literally preserving everything. From their body of work to artwork, equipment, to properties, and that is not because he needed to, it’s because he wants to.And I think deeply, it’s out of respect. Any deadhead in this day and age owes john a big thank you.
I hope deep inside that john buys bill walton’s house as it’s for sale and should be preserved forever. another hating article from somebody who most likely wasn’t even there.
If john’s tearing it down or ruining the legacy, what are you doing with this Article?
Curr • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:45 am
The Grateful Dead have been successful for a long time. Dead and Company are probably not everyone’s favorite but they carry on the music. Obviously they make way more money than the dead ever did. Not the band The Dead but the Grateful Dead
John E MARCELLINO • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:05 am
The recordings carry on the music way better than some mediocre cover band.. all I need is my englishtown 77 and my 5.1 surround sound and my 60-inch plasma and I’m right back in it.. who needs a bunch of drunken frat boys spilling their beer on their back while John Mayer fiddles around on his guitar.. sorry it’s over get used to it…
BV • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:41 am
So grateful for what Dead & Co have been giving us, I am in heaven hearing their versions of the music we love. The jamming brings me to heights I didn’t think I would get to again after GD ended. And, being in a large space sharing that with thousands of other brothers & sisters in music is such a gift for me. Sphere not my favorite situation for all of this , but also can’t beat a weekend getaway in the 90s by the pool and awesome music each night. Hope the band can offer another run.
John E MARCELLINO • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:06 am
You’re fooling yourself they suck their mediocre at best.. Jerry’s rolling in his grave and so is Phil
Rico • Oct 10, 2025 at 11:47 am
You’re simply wrong on all counts, Jerry & Phil rolling in their graves ain’t happening. Both would be thrilled especially Phil with Grahame playing great all weekend in SF in August.
elycia • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:26 am
Wow, this writer is a hater. Time moves on, close your eyes at a D&C show and let the music take you. Slow or fast. I’ve been on the bus since 76 and now Mayer is Dead to me. Its been a decade already. Why choose to publish this now? Lets all just be kind. If you don’t like the music, then just don’t listen.
mkav • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:43 am
The author is clearly entitled to his opinion. but…wow…he has completely missed the point.
And to liken Mayer’s immersion into the Dead’s catalog and Garcia’s style to a teenager’s phase, just makes the author sound like no matter what Mayer does. it will be wrong.
I’ve seen D&Co 5 or 6 tomes and agree the pace is often too slow, but they’re ot trying to replicate the Dead.
One last point, I did catch a show around Sphere and I was blown away by the band (best I’ve seen them), the visuals and the sound.
FWIW, I saw original Dead maybe 20 times. starting in 1976, Legion of Mary once and Ratdog maybe 6 or 8 times, so I do have a basis of comparison.
Is Mayer Garcia? No, who is? But that’s o reason to write such a spiteful article.

I think this guy don’t know what he’s talking about. John is a great guitar player. That being said they could’ve made a lot better choices. If serving the music was the goal. I liked the other John from dark star. Ive never warmed up to john Mayers vocals. Especially on Jerry tunes. I’m just glad they’re still around.
Mike • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:16 am
You onow I would have totally agreed with this article when Dead and Company first came out. To me then the Dead passed on when Garcia passed. Eventually I missed it I missed the shows I missed the community I missed it all. So I gave it a shot I bought tickets and I went to see Dead and Company. I realized something that day of the concert. I was wrong I missed the shows cause I was mourning the loss of Garcia. Is it the same? No but it never has been so same. The real Grateful Dead has never been the same. So many have been lost over the years. Pig pen was dead before I was alive, Brent which was my favorite also gone to soon I only saw live twice. Keep the music alive, keep the movement alive, keep thr community alive. Smile, smile, smile.
Dan • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:12 am
Worst take EVER. John Mayer has filled a void that many thought would be impossible. His guitar work is magic and his love and commitment for the music and the band is unquestionable.
I’m really fed up with the haters on John Mayer. 🤬

Garcia is irreplaceable, yet Mayer makes for a perfect reasonable facsimile…he’s been great every time I’ve seen him in concert.
Christopher Shane Hart • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:10 am
I think maybe you’re the one who missed GD in the 70’s though 95. It was the whole community that made a Dead show, at 69 YO I got to take my nephew and great nephew to see Dead & Co. at the Sphere, it was incredible, the same community showed up, we had a once in a lifetime experience, I felt the same “Love” the same Deadheads (of all ages) some songs came together better than others but that was always the case. The sound quality and the comfort of the venue was perfect for the older crowd. I agree JM can’t sing Garcia, but he is a phenomenal player and really trying to capture some Garcia, he’s young by comparison given time he is getting it. I don’t think anyone walked away disappointed, If you like the Dead Go see them if they come back to the Sphere and you will NOT be disappointed.

Nothing ever stays the same. Change is permanent. Enjoy each moment of living your life or don’t, its up to you, the individual. Comparing anyone or anything in a competitive way is a waste of precious time. We really need less of these reviews and more free flow living of our lives.

Johnathan Eric Collins • Oct 10, 2025 at 6:49 am
I feel the same way.
I was a punk rock tour kid and saw 64 shows in the 80’s and 90’s .
The death of Jerry ended the ride for me and I couldn’t listen to shows for decades afterward .
I have a black sheep uncle that lived the 60’s and 70’s to the hilt and was a biker who at some point ended up working on the beast tour and a few others .
He took me to my first show in Columbia md as a kid and I was hooked .
I play guitar and was a precocious kid who went down the whole beat writers , electric kool aid rabbit hole and dead tour was just the ne plus ultra if you were on that path .
When I started hitting shows and realized there was a place for me there , even if I was a little divergent from the older kids I loaded up the old ‘77 blazer and got the road hard .
There were plenty of weirdos just like me .
It really was an organic family that helped each other move about the country and get down .
Peak life experience for sure .
In the aftermath after ‘95 I got deeper into all the back story of the band and was a bit horrified to conclude that the rest of the fellahs kind of rode Jerry into the ground .
I know it was complicated and that the huge ‘family’ and their payroll kept them on tour longer and more often than proved wise for Jerry’s health but it’s still hard not to feel some resentment towards them .
He was definitely the linchpin and the way the rest of the band treated each other afterwards just kind of reinforced my suspicions . ( plus I find most of the side projects without Jerry unlistenable ) .
I have a bunch of friends who have stayed in it and was tempted to go to a chunk of the sphere run with them but listening to a few dead and co shows turned me off completely .
Way , waaayyyy too slow . ( I know they are old ) but it’s just insufferable to listen to for me .
No Phil , no Jerry ? No dead .
Only folks who have no understanding of how amazing it used to be could listen to it in its current form .
John Mayer and n lead guitar , wtf ?!?!? That tells you everything you need to know about where these guys heads are at .
All these kids now and their facile demand for surface level ‘experiences ‘ .
Child please , you are a deadhead in delusion only .
I wish it had lasted forever and am so grateful I got to see so many shows at the end , but if you missed it back then , too bad , it’s gone and all they are doing at this point is padding the accounts for the grandkids .
I hate to hold that against them but I also find it a lackluster simulacra .
I just feel like if you like this new look version you never understood what was great about it originally .
I tried to get into post dead jam stuff for a bit but the emotionally hollow core of phish and their ilk just can’t cut it and like most imitations ( dead and co emphatically included ) eventually just veers to self parody and downright mockery .
I know Mayer is going to ride this the rest of his days and I’m cringing already .
I used to think Jerry was so old but he died at 53 , which I’m about to turn myself in a couple months !! Egads !!!
Rest in peace mang , who could have used a bit longer but you are hardly missing shit down here .
Long live the dead ! Screw the company !!
Brian • Oct 10, 2025 at 9:15 am
Dead and Company are Muzak. They play at 3/4 speed. I won tickets years ago and was disappointed.
Id rather see DSO or JRAD.

Money, it’s a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
Johnathan Eric Collins • Oct 10, 2025 at 8:00 am
As an addenda , I should say that John khan , bassist for jgb , probably held the lions share of the blame for the dragon chasing .
Tho I’ve been able to finally enjoy dead base and hearing old shows again in the last few years , jgb ( who toured behind heavily as well ) shows are still painful .
Partly for the less adorned emotional sincerity and stark intimacy Jerry gets in those shows but also because of the malevolent presence playing bass .
He was the original hook up for the black tar , which he was addicted to as well and every week Jerry was off tour with the dead he was playing shows with khan somewhere to keep the dealer rich .
I know dead guys kind of looked to Jerry as the older brother and decision maker but they still just kind of stood around and watched him die for years and to my ears haven’t been able to really make it all the way up there without him .
Anyhow , I am grateful to them all ( except khan and heroin dealers ) .
They led me down the golden road .
John • Oct 10, 2025 at 1:35 am

This is an insightful critique that would be spot on if it were published at the end of Mayer’s first year with the band. The truth is Mayer has grown into his unexpected role over time and helped the band (and the music) evolve. A lot. Anyone who is still hating on Mayer is entitled to their opinion, but it isn’t based on the music he’s playing.
Is the band’s current existence in service of making money? That charge implies they are are chasing profits over art with the sphere shows in Vegas. The only answer to that charge is: Duh.
I didn’t see them in Vegas so I can’t speak to them becoming an overblown production like KISS, but that claim sounds hyperbolic to me. I don’t doubt it was loud and visually bold and in your face…but that’s the whole point of a venue like the sphere, isn’t it?
Collin S • Oct 10, 2025 at 12:04 am

I’m a little confused on the point of this article. You start out with a slight on Mayers hits forgetting his deep meaningful songs like Daughters, Waiting on the World to change, Gravity…. You then attack his playing while also taking about the work and dedication he has while the next sentence is it’s a weekend fad like a changing hair color, or is that just a touch of grey?
From that to the point of ticket prices. Now this point I can get behind. Most of this is actually seeming like a cash grab., if you want to see the legendary members of the Dead (and here is the split) ¹continue to push boundaries with a slower take on the music (or) ²join a cover band in which they cover themselves for the amazing price of a arm and a leg this band is for you.
I think the first part of the article is you trying to play into some dumb lot kids argument of Johns playing or selling out his growth as a musician and down playing what he has done for the band, seeing how both the lot kid and the other bull sh$#er paid the price and made the effort to be there makes this nothing but a trash piece just to score points before criticizing the actual thing that needs criticizing.
I saw grow some and state what needs to be stated but realiz that Mayer is doing what no one else could do. Jerry sadly isn’t here and that’s a real huge drag. But some of “the others” are here and Mayer is giving them a way and us fans a reason to get together maybe for the last time to hear and see the guys whome wrote and played that music that means so much to us fans. It gives us a way to share with our sons and daughters and to friends that maybe not have been properly introduced to the music and our love of this music live.
If for nothing else the ability for us to gather possibly one last time, to shake hands with a stranger, to dance under the stars or in a innovative sphere and seeing has the Grateful Dead always pushed technology to the limits back in the day this whole thing here seems perfectly in line with the legacy.
Let’s absolutely talk about pricing.
But also
Let’s enjoy and cherish these last moments with the band.
Let’s give credit to John for being John.
Let’s give thanks for what Jerry gave us.
Let’s give thanks for John doing what he can as John in the band allowing us to celebrate the love of the music live.
