The Department of Defense (DOD) will review and potentially cut off tuition aid for active service members at Boston College and other elite universities nationwide that are no longer “committed to American values,” per a video statement from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The policy, which was rolled out on Feb. 6 with an accompanying press release, stated that beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, the Pentagon would sever its ties with Harvard University.
The DOD, according to the release, will discontinue graduate-level professional military education, fellowships, and certificate programs.
“For too long, this department has sent our best and brightest officers to Harvard, hoping the university would better understand and appreciate our warrior class,” Hegseth said. “Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard—heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks.”
In the release, Hegseth states that an official list of institutions under threat of aid cuts is being prepared.
“In two week’s time, components of all of our departments—Army, Navy, and Air Force—will evaluate all existing graduate programs for active-duty service members at all Ivy League universities, and other civilian universities,” Hegseth said in the video statement.
According to CNN’s review of a preliminary list compiled by the Army, BC is at a “moderate to high risk” of being targeted.
An official list has not been made public.
Hegseth warned of “pervasive institutional bias” at the targeted universities and a “lack of viewpoint diversity” in their respective students—attributes he argues erode the military’s mission.
The Pentagon has provided tuition benefits for active-duty service members, with many branches offering fully funded graduate programs for career advancement and life after service. The Army specifically offers post-graduate degrees in both medicine and law, among others, according to the DOD website.

Pete Hegseth’s words, actions, attitudes are contemptible. A federal judge lambasted Hegseth who tried to silence US Senator Mark Kelly. The Judge scathingly reminded Hegseth that Veterans have free speech rights. Hegseth is a war monger. Hegseth is a wannabee Crusader; he’s tattooed his body with Crusader imagery. He forgets that the Crusaders lost and were driven out of the Middle East after 200 years of crusading interventionism. Autocrat Hegseth changes the DOD to the Department of War. Peace is the only victory. Rename the DOD the Department of Peace. Push diplomacy and negotiations. Force Hegseth to resign. Hegseth supports Israel’s genocide, war crimes, inhumane crimes in Gaza. Fire Hegseth before he starts another war.
