The South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of Boston’s most treasured traditions.
Here’s what you need to know to enjoy the festivities this Sunday, March 15.
A Brief History
According to the parade’s website, Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities date back to 1737, when the city’s Irish community came together to display solidarity, share their culture, and honor Ireland’s patron saint.
In addition to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, the parade commemorates Evacuation Day, which honors the expulsion of British troops from Boston on March 17, 1776.
The parade also serves as a way to honor veterans and active military and is organized by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council.
Wear Green!
On parade day, Southie becomes a sea of green.
You can take it to the extreme and purchase a leprechaun costume, or keep it simple with some green beads. A funny T-shirt is also a classic staple.
Either way, make sure to have some of this lucky color on—or risk getting pinched by a leprechaun.
Taking the T
The parade starts at 11:30 a.m., but the festivities begin much earlier. It’s a long journey to get to the parade route, but don’t worry—here’s a step-by-step formula.
Board the Green Line BC stop first (I recommend getting there at 9 a.m. just to be safe). Take the T to Park Street and then transfer to the Red Line. Take the Red Line to South Station and walk to a spot along the parade route.
Then find a good spot to watch and enjoy the parade!
Enjoy the Irish Spirit!
The parade is filled with spirit, including various floats, marching bands, bagpipers, and other local organizations and groups.
Attending the parade is a great way to support the Boston community and engage in a time-honored tradition. While this is a day full of fun, please remember to be respectful and responsible, and have a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day!
