After a shutout loss on Thursday and a 13-run defeat on Friday, it didn’t appear as though things could get much worse for Boston College baseball in its season-ending series against national powerhouse Georgia Tech. But the Eagles fell again on Saturday, this time to the tune of a 15–2 route in seven innings.
The final weekend certainly wasn’t what head coach Todd Interdonato had envisioned from his team. After Thursday’s 9–0 defeat, he said it was the most upset with the team that he’d been all season.
But don’t be fooled: The Eagles’ final weekend of the season—regardless of how deflating it might have been for fans—was not representative of the season they had.
BC finished with 36 wins—the program’s most since 2023—and knocked off nationally-ranked opponents, including then-No. 24 Miami and then-No. 9 Virginia. It stuck with then-No. 6 North Carolina, too, losing that series’ rubber match by just one run.
All season, the Eagles have shown mental toughness and an ability to stick to their unique game plan. That sense of identity seemed to have gotten a bit lost when they faced the home-run generating Yellow Jackets, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. It just means they must get it back—preferably before Thursday.
Despite the series loss, BC heads into the ACC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, earning itself a bye for the first two rounds. It will face the winner of a game between No.5-seeded Miami and the winner of Tuesday’s Stanford-California matchup.
Last time BC faced Miami, it stole the series on the road for the first time in program history. The Eagles also swept California at home, though two of those games were close. BC didn’t face Stanford this season, but the Cardinal dropped its series to Cal last week to close out its regular season.
One final note: The Eagles managed to stir up some postseason magic last season following a mediocre regular season, grabbing two upset wins and charging to the ACC Quarterfinals before losing to No. 3-seed UNC.
What will it take for BC to do that again? It’s hard to be exactly sure, but one thing is for certain: The Eagles need rhythm to thrive.
It’s what Interdonato pointed out after Friday’s loss, and something fans have seen all season long. “Birdball,” as it’s come to be known, is a style that relies on consistency. To make a run, BC needs to play that classic “Birdball.” It needs its pitching staff to step up and win games, like it has all season. And more than anything, BC needs to find its identity again.
Put all those together, and BC fans may just have an exciting tournament on their hands.
