Women’s Hockey
In its first games since Dec. 10, Boston College women’s hockey hit the ice on Friday and Saturday for a home-and-home series against No. 10 Connecticut. The Eagles (10–10, 8–7 Hockey East) fell to UConn (17–5–2, 11–4–2) in both games of the series, dropping their third straight contest.
After trailing 2–0 heading into the final frame on Saturday, BC scored three third-period goals. An unassisted Hannah Bilka put the Eagles up 3–2 with 1:07 left to play. But UConn pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, and Summer-Rae Dobson netted one past BC netminder Abigail Levy with 23 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
Although the Eagles outshot UConn 5–2 in overtime, Natalie Snodgrass sent one through the legs of Levy just under four minutes into the period to hand UConn a 4–3 victory and a series sweep.
While Saturday night’s matchup was a thriller, the story was not the same on Friday. UConn scored a goal in each period to shut BC out 3–0 and secure its first win of the weekend.
Men’s Hockey
Like BC women’s hockey, BC men’s hockey dropped both games of its home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday against New Hampshire.
BC (10–8–3, 5–6–2 Hockey East) first headed to Durham, N.H. and fell 3–2 to the Wildcats (11–10–1, 5–7–1) before returning to Chestnut Hill, where the Eagles dropped their second matchup of the weekend 5–2.
The Eagles were scoreless in the first two periods of Saturday night’s matchup, as UConn got out to a 4–0 start. Just short of halfway through the third frame, Colby Ambrosio got BC on the board for the first time in the game. Trevor Kuntar followed just five minutes later, but the Eagles’ third-period effort was too little, too late and UNH walked away with its first win of the series.
Marc McLaughlin scored both of Friday night’s goals for the Eagles. He is tied for the lead in Hockey East in overall goals scored with 16. After a scoreless first period for both teams, McLaughlin started things off, netting his seventh power-play goal of the season three and a half minutes into the second period.
After three straight UNH goals, McLaughlin scored his second of the night with just 18 seconds left to play. BC had two shots in the final 15 minutes but did not execute on either, failing to send the game to overtime and giving UNH the weekend sweep.
Women’s Basketball
Looking for its fourth straight ACC win, BC women’s basketball (12–5, 3–3 Atlantic Coast) faced No. 3 Louisville (15–1, 5–0) Sunday, falling to the Cardinals 63–53.
BC got out to a hot start early, leaving the first quarter ahead 20–10 after shooting 44.4 percent during the quarter. Louisville came out with a vengeance in the second quarter, though, holding BC to two field goals for 22.2 percent shooting and forcing 10 turnovers to outscore the Eagles 22–5.
Louisville maintained its lead for the rest of the matchup, ultimately securing a 10-point lead. Entering Sunday’s matchup, BC had won four straight and hadn’t lost since it last faced Louisville on Dec. 30. The Eagles fared better Sunday than they did in the two teams’ last matchup, where the Cardinals won 79–49.
BC’s leading scorer Taylor Soule once again led the Eagles in points, scoring 17 points in her 37 minutes on the court. Maria Gakdeng tallied a team-high seven rebounds, along with eight points, a career-high three steals, and two blocks. Gakdeng earned her fourth straight ACC Freshman of the Week award Monday.
