Newton City Council Candidates Advance to November Municipal Election

Ward 2 candidates Dan Gaynor and David Micley and Ward 6 candidates Martha Bixby and Lisa Gordan will advance to November’s municipal runoff election, according to unofficial election results posted by the City of Newton on Tuesday night.

In Ward 2, Gaynor and Micley received 803 and 678 votes each, with the third candidate—Peter Bruce—receiving 546 votes.

In Ward 6, Bixby and Gordon received 882 and 584 votes, defeating the third candidate, Mark Holt, who received 124 votes.

Gaynor and Micley will face off in November. The winner will replace Emily Norton, the outgoing Ward 2 councilor.

The winner between Bixby and Gordon will replace Ward 6 Councilor Brenda Noel, who is vacating her position on the city council.

All candidates participated in a ward-specific debate last week, hosted by the four neighborhood area councils. During the debates, the candidates focused on the implications of rezoning efforts to update decades-old zoning maps and ordinances, which the city will finalize in the coming months.

Voters cast a total of 2,034 ballots in Ward 2 and 1,598 ballots in Ward 6.

The city will hold November’s municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
