When Newton resident Kayla Noblecilla heard that Wally’s Wicked Good Ice Cream in Auburndale was up for sale, she jumped at the chance.
According to her husband, David Martinez-LeBron, she’s long dreamed of having her own business.
“She always wanted to own a store,” Martinez-LeBron said. “Or something that could be ours as a family.”
The timing was perfect, explained Martinez-LeBron. The previous owner has been running this neighborhood store for years and wanted it to stay local.
“He had a couple of offers,” said Martinez-LeBron. “He definitely wanted to keep it in the community.”
This week, the couple has officially reopened Wally’s Wicked Good Ice Cream as its new owners. While the store itself remains the same, Noblecilla and Martinez-LeBron have brought fresh ideas and a family spirit to the business.
The couple moved to Auburndale in 2019 and lives just five minutes from the ice cream shop. Their four young children attend the local school, explained Noblecilla, and the support they’ve received from the community since reopening has been overwhelming.
“The community has always been very welcoming,” Noblecilla said. “Since they found out we bought the shop, a lot of families come by almost every day. It’s nice to feel their support.”
Even before being the owners, Wally’s was a regular stop for the family. Noblecilla said they used to visit the shop with their kids, and certain flavors were a part of their routine.
“When we would come here, my daughter would always ask for the cotton candy ice cream,” Noblecilla said. “It’s a classic kid flavor.”
Becoming the owners of the shop is a full-circle moment for them. A place that once served their family now belongs to it.
But it’s not just Noblecilla and Martinez-LeBron running the show—the shop is a family operation. After school, the kids love coming in to help.
“One wants to be in charge of the register,” Martinez-LeBron said. “The other one wants to do toppings, and one is learning to scoop.”
In addition to the family, many of Wally’s former high school and college employees have stayed on, helping during the busier hours.
Customers can also expect many new additions to Wally’s business. Although the shop used to close during the winter, Noblecilla and Martinez-LeBron have decided to have it open year-round—introducing new winter treats like hot chocolate to keep people warm.
The couple has also made numerous additions to Wally’s menu, including specialty milkshakes, ice cream nachos, ice cream flights, and candy-filled mini sugar cones. But of course, the classic ice cream and frozen yogurt remain. Noblecilla recommends the Milky Way flavor, saying it was unexpectedly delicious.
“I’m usually a plain chocolate girl,” Noblecilla said. “But when we tried the flavors, the Milky Way really surprised me.”
Other flavor favorites include cotton candy, which is lighter and less sweet than expected, and a black raspberry fro-yo, popular for the raspberry and chocolate flavor combination.
The new owners plan to celebrate their first week with a grand reopening event, inviting community members to stop by on Saturday.
“I invited most of my community,” Noblecilla said. “So we’ll see how it turns out.”
With a brand-new family, brand-new treats, and deep community roots, the new Wally’s Wicked Good Ice Cream is set to remain a beloved local spot, entering a new chapter while remaining dedicated to keeping things sweet.
