Boston College lacrosse has rarely been held to single-goal quarters. On Wednesday, though, it happened twice as the Eagles fell to Duke 17–6 in Durham, N.C. and dropped to .500 in ACC play.
The Eagles (2–4, 2–2 Atlantic Coast) scored just one goal in each of the first two quarters, falling behind 9–2 at half. Duke (5–2, 2–1) didn’t slow after the break, outscoring BC 6–2 in the third quarter to cement a Blue Devils win.
Duke got 20 draw controls to BC’s four and dominated the shot count 33–16. Marissa White led the Eagles with three goals—her third hat trick of the season—while Giulia Colarusso added two and Molly Driscoll tacked on one.
The Blue Devils were hot from the start. Avery Doran scored the first goal of the game 1:16 into the action, and Caitlin Barrett added another 55 seconds later to put her team up 2–0.
Driscoll assisted a Colarusso goal 6:18 into the period to cut Duke’s lead in half, but the Blue Devils scored twice in 35 seconds, stretching their advantage to 4–1.
Doran scored again before the first quarter ended, and a foul on Kaitlyn Cole gave Eva Pronti the opportunity for a free position shot, which she capitalized on to put Duke up 6–1 heading into the second quarter.
Doran ended with a game-high five goals, and Pronti put up three.
The Eagles contained the Blue Devils slightly better in the second quarter, holding them to three goals. But BC once again struggled to score, and its only goal of the period came on a free position shot from White.
The Eagles were down 9–2 at half, and that lead only got bigger in the third quarter. Duke scored three goals in the first 2:50 before Colarusso could respond for BC. Driscoll scored on a free position shot with 3:15 left in the period, but Doran responded once again, and the game headed into the fourth quarter with Duke leading 15–4.
White scored twice more in the final frame, but it was too little too late as the rest of BC’s offense could not muster any sort of comeback effort and the Eagles fell 17–6.
