After squeezing out a one-run victory over Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Boston College baseball returned to its home field on Wednesday looking for a quick start.
BC would get it, scoring three runs in the first inning on the way to its second straight victory to open up its home slate.
The Eagles (13–8, 2–4 Atlantic Coast) rode solid two-out hitting and a trio of home runs to a dominant 12–2 victory over UMass Lowell (7–9, 0–0 America East).
The River Hawks managed to put 14 runners on base, but BC’s efficiency at the plate proved to be the difference maker. The Eagles turned their 14 hits into 12 runs, while the River Hawks struggled to get their baserunners across home plate.
The trend began in the first inning. After BC’s Chase Hartsell retired the River Hawks in order, UML’s Frankie DeMaro appeared ready to match him by recording two quick outs.
But Nick Wang sparked a rally with a triple to right center. After a Jack Toomey walk, Danny Surowiec launched a three-run homer to right field to give the Eagles an early 3–0 lead.
BC continued the two-out trend in the second inning.
Following a hit by pitch and a stolen base, Ty Mainolfi doubled to right center to score one. Wang followed with an RBI single, and Toomey added a double of his own before the River Hawks could finally escape the frame with BC up 5–1.
The River Hawks were able to get on base but couldn’t come through with runners in scoring position. In the first six innings alone, they left nine runners stranded—including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Eagles put the game out of reach in the middle frames. Colin Larson crushed a two-run blast in the fifth, and Toomey smashed a two-run homer of his own in the sixth to extend the lead to 11–1.
Rowan Masse recorded his third hit of the day to drive in a second run for UML and extend the game in the seventh, but the Eagles’ depth remained too much. Pinch-hitter Esteban Garcia finished out the game in the eighth, lining an RBI single to secure a 12–2 mercy-rule win.
