Chris Cornell, Editors, And Hurts In Singles This Week

Chris Cornell – “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”

Best known for his vocals in Soundgarden, Cornell’s groove-oriented single from his forthcoming solo album Higher Truth reminds us that he hasn’t lost his touch. While the track is certainly more clean-cut and poppy than his older material, Cornell rests on his vocal laurels. He reprises that powerful, raspy voice in a single that delivers the kind of melodramatic lyrics and driving guitar/bass rhythm that defined the ‘90s scene.

Editors – “Life Is a Fear”

In the third single from their upcoming album No Harm, Editors offer more of the same dark vocals, synthesized melodies, and beat-driven anthems that’ve made them one of the premiere post-punk bands. Hailing from England, Editors—whose electronic soundscapes are reminiscent of other British bands like Depeche Mode—don’t let us down with this track, but they also don’t exactly present anything fresh or groundbreaking.

Hurts – “Slow

5 stars

As the title suggests, this single from English duo Hurts captivates with a slow, pulsing rhythm and yearning vocals.  A relatively bare track instrumentally, the power of “Slow” lies in the raw crooning of singer Theo Hutchcraft and the haunting synth from Adam Anderson. This track continues the heavy, beat-centric vibe that characterized their previous album Exile and is an exciting preview to what should be a solid album.
