Men’s Tennis
As has been the trend all season—and throughout recent memory—for Boston College men’s tennis, the Eagles (2-8, 0-8 Atlantic Coast) faltered in ACC play, winning just one match across a two-game tour in North Carolina. BC dropped its first game of the weekend to Duke 6-1, followed by a 7-0 blanking at the hands of North Carolina on Saturday.
The second of the Eagles’ weekend matchups marked the seventh time this season that BC has been shut out by an ACC opponent. The No. 2 Tar Heels (13-1, 6-1) took home straight-set victories on all six singles courts. UNC also earned the doubles point with 6-1 victories over the teams of Shreekar Eedara and Santiago Montufar plus Mason Fung and Bennett Turner. The Eagles’ team of Max Motlagh and Sean Mullins won two games but fell 6-2.
Motlagh was the sole court winner for the Eagles on Friday, winning his singles court in straight sets over Duke’s Samuel Rubell. Duke took the other five singles courts in straight sets.
Volleyball
After going without a win throughout the entirety of its fall season, BC volleyball finished out its year with five straight wins, including two wins over Wake Forest and one non-conference win over Merrimack this weekend. Amaka Chukwujekwu took home All-ACC honors for the second straight season, becoming the first BC player since Allison Anderson in 2005 and 2006 to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons.
To close out its season, BC (6-12, 4-12 Atlantic Coast) took down Merrimack (0-13, 0-8 Northeast) in a non-conference matchup and won 3-1. BC won 25-14, 25-14, 20-25, and 25-14. Katrina Jensen recorded 14 kills in the win. Fellow freshmen Silvia Ianeselli and Peyton Minyard added 11 kills and three aces each. Head coach Jason Kennedy’s lineup is stacked with freshmen, and after an adjusting period in the fall, they have become an essential presence on the court for the Eagles.
The Eagles also took on Wake Forest (1-15, 1-13) twice, once on Thursday and once on Friday. In the latter, BC came back to win 3-2 (20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 31-33, 16-14) after dropping the first set to the Demon Deacons, and two of the sets went to extra points. Jensen led the charge again with 23 kills in the hard-fought victory.
Thursday’s weekend-opening match was a smoother win for the Eagles, as they defeated Wake Forest 3-1. The Demon Deacons once again took the first set, but BC rebounded to win the next three (20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19). Senior Clare Naughton recorded 13 kills and three blocks.
Women’s Soccer
BC women’s soccer and Northeastern went 108 minutes without a score until Alison Heckman found the back of the net for the Eagles in double overtime. Zoie Allen earned credit on the assist—her first career point—to end the marathon game. Allie Augur finished the game with four saves for the Eagles, and Angeline Friel had four for the Huskies. After winning just one game in the fall portion of its season, BC has now won two of its last three this spring.
Field Hockey
After stunning No. 1 Louisville with a 1-0 shutout the week prior, BC field hockey dropped just its second contest of this spring to No. 14 Virginia on Friday in a 1-0 decision. The Cavaliers shut down BC’s hopes of an offensive attack, holding the Eagles to a single shot on goal. Virginia’s game-winning tally came in the 34th minute, and Jonna Kennedy finished with three saves in goal after not playing last week.
Sailing
BC sailing split its fleet and competed in two regattas this weekend, finishing third out of six teams at the BC Team Race and ninth out of nine teams at the Salve Regina Fleet Race. In three round robins in their home race, Eagles’ skippers Robert Hunter, Colleen O’Brien, and Jack DeNatale and crew Nicole Moeder, Laura Ferraris, and Elizabeth Russell finished with a 7-8 record.
