For the second time in four weeks, Boston College closed and canceled classes due to a snowstorm that’s expected to bring up to a foot and a half of snow to the greater Boston area.
“Due to the winter storm, Boston College will be closed and all classes cancelled on Monday, February 23,” an urgent BC weather alert said.
On Jan. 25, the University canceled classes after a winter storm dumped over 20 inches of snow in Boston and across Massachusetts. This marked the first time in eight years that BC canceled classes due to extreme weather.
BC last canceled classes multiple times in an academic year in 2015 after the University closed four times after four snowstorms hit Boston within a few weeks.
The announcement came after Boston issued a blizzard warning earlier Sunday. The East Coast storm is expected to start Sunday evening and carry into the majority of Monday before tapering off in the evening.
In anticipation of the storm, Governor Maura Healey declared a state-wide emergency, activating the State Emergency Operations Center and up to 200 National Guard members.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for western and central Massachusetts and a Blizzard Warning for eastern Massachusetts—the first in four years after a 2022 storm brought 23.2 inches to Boston.
The University alerted the campus community at 10:02 p.m. Tufts University and Boston University both canceled classes, while Northeastern University and Harvard University moved classes online.
