“Public health is—in a way—we’re victims of our own success,” Landrigan said. “Over the past 75 years, people in medicine and public health have made enormous strides in conquering disease.”

“We all do this because we know our situations are over. I am not doing this to improve my case. My case is over,” Palladino said. “Every woman that is part of our group says they just don't want this to happen to other women and other children.”

“Instead of asking, ‘What do you want to do after graduation?’ we should be asking, ‘What do you hope to always be doing, no matter what your job is?’,” Liang said. “That question gets to the heart of purpose—and the human skills that are relevant across industry and appreciate over time.”

“I found it really interesting to learn about what makes us tick, what makes people do what they do,” Aroy said. “This motivation stuck with me, even now, as a filmmaker, people’s stories genuinely interest me.”

“All of this is a human endeavor—education, public policy, building a pluralistic society—all aimed at benefiting people,” Dougherty said. “The goal is always to serve the greatest number of people in the best possible way, no matter whether you're in federal service, academia, or an educational institution.”
