On Wednesday, the U.S. Soccer Federation and U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team head coach Jitka Klimkova announced the complete roster for the upcoming CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. Boston College women’s soccer midfielder Sam Coffey was one of just 20 players to make the cut.
The freshman, who was named to the preliminary roster on Dec. 2, navigated a selection process that Klimkova described as ‘difficult’ in a Q&A with the U.S. Soccer website.
“This was not an easy process,” Klimkova said. “To look over the entire year, then boil it down to the 30 players in the New Year’s camp and then pick the final roster was difficult, and that’s a credit to the players. The most recent camp was so competitive. The players left everything on the field and they were really battling for roster spots.”
Coffey has seven caps and a goal for the U.S. so far in her career.
The tournament runs from Jan. 18 to 28, with the Americans playing three initial matches in the group stage. Coffey’s squad will take on Nicaragua, Jamaica, and Mexico. It’s attempting to win its fifth-straight CONCACAF title and qualify for the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France.
Coffey looks to continue her impressive freshman campaign, coming off a season in which she led the Eagles in scoring. The 5-foot-6 forward netted five goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 20 games, earning a spot on both the ACC All-Conference Third Team and the All-Freshman Team.
One of 12 freshman on the roster, she’s joined by plenty of familiar faces. Four other players, including both of the team’s goaltenders, play in the ACC. Zoe Morse, Taryn Torres, and Laurel Ivory go to Virginia, while Amanda McGlynn attends Virginia Tech.
