Boston College field hockey extended its losing streak to three games on Friday, falling to No. 8 Duke for the Eagles’ sixth conference loss of the season.
While BC (4–9, 0–6 Atlantic Coast) was able to muster a goal against the Blue Devils (9–4, 4–2), it was not enough as the Eagles fell 3–1 at home.
Unlike their last two nailbiter games, the matchup started badly for the Eagles as Duke took no time getting on the board.
A little less than seven minutes into the game, Madison Beach scored Duke’s first goal after a give-and-go from Alaina McVeigh. Despite BC goalkeeper Charley Kramer diving to the ground, she was unable to come up with the save.
The second frame saw no goals, and BC couldn’t get on the board as its only penalty corner of the frame went wide. That pattern continued, as only one of the Eagles’ 12 shots ended up in the back of the Blue Devils’ net.
Everything seemed to unravel further when Duke notched two goals in two minutes in the third frame, thanks to goals from Alana McVeigh and Shae Wozniak.
It wasn’t until the final frame that the Eagles landed a punch.
Laila Rosenquest didn’t let up after her shot was blocked following a Madeline Leigh penalty corner. Just five seconds later, Rosenquest corralled the deflection and forced it back into the net, cutting the Blue Devils’ lead to two.
But it was far too little too late, as the Eagles continued their ACC struggles with a loss. What ultimately plagued the Eagles was their inability to match their opponents’ offensive chances, as they tallied just 12 shots to Duke’s 17.
It didn’t help that the Eagles gave up 10 penalty corners to a top-10 team, compared to BC’s five, none of which resulted in an Eagles’ goal as they fell 3–1 for their third straight loss.
